  1. Nuclear Safety Standards Committee (NUSSC) working Methods Agenda Item T3.1 b Marja-Leena J rvinen (NUSSC Chairperson) Sonal Gandhi (NUSSC Scientific Secretary) 50thmeeting of TRANSSC 24-26 June 2025

  2. NUSSC Working Methods NUSSC is responsible for review of nuclear Safety Standards in the Operation, Design, Site Evaluation and Research Reactor categories. Also,in the General Safety category, and the Fuel Cycle Facility category. 2 meetings are held in a year generally June and November Work between the regular meetings Extraordinary NUSSC virtual meetings [2023, 2024] Working Groups e-Working Groups [virtual] NUSSC meetings, including the working groups are attended by NUSSC members and Observers. Occasionally NUSSC members are accompanied by subject area experts to NUSSC meetings. - 2

  3. NUSSC Working Groups NUSSC working groups are set up to further discuss a particular issue or find a way forward regarding the Safety Standards. It is an efficient tool for NUSSC and has been used in the many NUSSC terms. Typically, only 1 WG exists at a time. WGs are generally composed of volunteers from NUSSC members and observers and IAEA staff, including the NUSSC secretariat. WG meetings are generally held in the gap between the regular NUSSC meetings Working Groups cease to exist when the task is completed, and/or its report is submitted to the NUSSC for further discussion and decision making. The WGs generally last less than 6 months. 2

Examples of NUSSC Working Groups WG DS414: To reach consensus on the resolution of the controversial issues on Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Design Created in NUSSC 29 (June 2010) Meeting held from 6 9 September 2010 WG ceased to exist post NUSSC 30 (Nov 2010) -when the revised draft was approved. WG DS462: To review the incorporation of lessons learned from Fukushima accident to safety requirements o Established in NUSSC-36 (October 2013) o Held meetings in between the NUSSC meetings 36 and 37. o WG Ceased to exist post NUSSC 37 -when DS462 was approved. 2

Examples of NUSSC Working Groups - WG on draft TECDOC Considerations on the Application of the IAEA Safety Requirements of Design of NPPs to suggest modifications based on current practices in IAEA Member States. Established in NUSSC 38 (November 2014) Meeting held during Spring 2015 Ceased to exist after NUSSC 39 (June 2015) - WG SF-1: to decide whether there is a need to revise SF-1 Established in NUSSC 45 (June 2018) Reported back to NUSSC 46 (November 2018) and ceased to exist post that. - WG DS508: to discuss the draft DS508 mainly regarding the concepts of DEC and PE. Established in NUSSC 48 (November 2019). Held meetings in February 2020. Reported back to NUSSC 49 and WG ceased to exist post that. 2

NUSSC e-WG Long Term Plan and e-WG Medium Term Plan Created: In NUSSC 57, June 2024 Purpose: To create a questionnaire for getting feedback from NUSSC members - analyse the responses of the NUSSC members and observers - Present the report to NUSSC 58 - Members: Volunteers asked during NUSSC 57 Meetings: Virtual. 2 meetings for Long Term Plan and 2 for Medium Term Plan Ceased to exist: After the report was submitted and presented to NUSSC-58 in November 2024. NUSSC 58 considered the e-WG report. Formulated NUSSC inputs to CSS for LTP and formulated NUSSC's MTP 6
