SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM) Health & Wellness and Business Gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of both the Health & Wellness and Business sectors while still in high school The SHSM programs have a number of required components, designed to give students a leg up to pursue post secondary opportunities in those fields

SHSM students will Make relevant connections to in the community to your specialization Earn sector-recognized certifications Gain specific knowledge and skills Tour post secondary institutions Experiential learning activities Open doors for summer jobs and future employment Earn a Red Seal designation on their OSSD Contact teachers: Health & Wellness Mr. Naisbitt Business Mr. Scarpelli

  13. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING ENGLISH You must take ENG3U1 if you are planning on applying to University You can take either ENG3C1 or ENG3U1 if you are planning on applying to College

  14. COMPULSORY CREDITS English, Math University University/College College Workplace MCR3U1 MCF3M1 MBF3C1 MEL3E1

  15. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH Is MCR3U1 necessary in order to apply to University? Answer: Program and University dependent i.e. Engineering, Science, and many Business Programs Minimum mark of 75% in Grade 10 Academic Math (MPM2D1) is recommended for continued success in MCR3U1

  16. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH Can I take MCF3M and still apply to University? Answer: YES!!! Any program that requires or recommends one 4U Math i.e. any Bachelor of Arts Degree, Social Sciences, Nursing, Health Sciences

  17. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH MCF3M1 is a prerequisite for MDM4U1 If your MPM2D1 mark is below 75% and you still MUST take MCR3U1, we recommend that you take the MCF3M1 course first

  18. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH Can I take a University Math course in grade 12 if I was in the applied stream in grades 9 and 10? Yes!!! MCF3M1 leading to MDM4U1

  19. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH What minimum mark should I have earned in MFM2P1 to be successful in MCF3M1? The Math department suggests a minimum mark of 80% in MFM2P1 to be successful in MCF3M1 If you have achieved a mark less than 80% in MFM2P1, you should select MBF3C1

  20. THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING MATH If your post secondary destination does not require or recommend a senior level Math credit and you are only looking to meet graduation requirements (3 Math credits, 1 at the senior level) consider the Workplace Math credit, MEL3E1

  23. OSSLT (MARCH 31, 2020) What if I do not successfully complete the OSSLT in grade 10? You will be given a second opportunity to write the OSSLT in grade 11

  24. OSSLT (MARCH 31, 2020) What if I am not successful on my second OSSLT attempt in grade11? Make an appointment with your guidance/learning services counsellor to add the Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O) in grade 12

  27. PLAN AHEAD When selecting optional courses for grade 11, make sure to consider the prerequisites for grade 12 courses you might be interested in taking. For example, if you would like to take Grade 12 University Biology (SBI4U1), you must first take Grade 11 University Biology (SBI3U1)

  30. REPERTOIRE BAND/CHOIR In addition to your 8 selected courses, you may earn an extra 0.5 credit by actively participating in the school BAND (AMR3MB) or CHOIR (AMR3MV) See Mrs. Wales or Mr. Barby for more information

  31. NEXT STEPS The final deadline for registration in myBlueprint is Friday February 21 Start researching your course selections, talk to your parents, your teachers, your guidance/learning services counsellor

SUMMER SCHOOL Registration opens WEDNESDAY APRIL 01, 2020 New Credit In-Class Courses: print off registration form, fill it out, get it signed by a parent/guardian, and return to your counsellor New Credit eLearning (on-line) Courses: must make an appointment to see your counsellor for registration For more information and/or to print off a registration form go to: https://www.tvdsb.ca/en/programs/camps-and- summer-programs.aspx

  34. NEXT STEPS Summer School and myBlueprint: If you plan on taking a summer school course DO NOT register for this course in myBlueprint. In the Student Comment section of the registration/confirmation page in myBlueprint, let your counsellor know what course you will register for in summer school. If you are not sure about summer school, register for the course at Oakridge for next year.
