Wilsons Moral Diplomacy Wilson s policy: Idea was to only give support to countries to encourage and develop human rights promotes the growth of the nation's ideals Hoped to increase number of democratic nations in Latin America
Background of Dominican Republic From 1844-1899 DR was under control of various military strong men Pedro Santana and Buenaventura B ez Pedro Santana heavy military spending Gave DR back to Spain Buenaventura B ez Protectorate plan Civil unrest followed after Ulises Espaillat,the president in the 1870s, us overthrown
Background of Dominican Republic Ulises Heureaux emerged as the new president Stability and national growth New roads, irrigation canals, more agricultural production, foreign investment Dictatorial rule-secret police force and restricted the press Assassinated Led to constantly shifting people in power Results in the country falling into disrest
Why the US Intervened Political turmoil in the Dominican Republic Dept of over $30 million dollars Financial Situation was Deteriorating Assassination of Ram n C ceres Caused civil war Young military officers began to revolt No one would fill in for president
How US became involved The US wanted to ensure a good president to DR most of them caused revolutions and rebellions Since independence, DR had over 50 presidents with only 3 that actually held peace Guardia Nacional Dominicana US National Guard in DR Only American soldiers
Aftermath of the DR Occupation US withdrawal from the DR after WW1 Public opinion was against occupation and in June 1921 US Representatives proposed a withdrawal plan called the Harding Plan The Harding Plan called for Dominican ratification of acts of military government After withdrawal there was issues with custom revenues The US and the DR signed a treaty on December 27, 1924
Fun Facts The city Santo Domingo is one of the oldest cities in the Americas Dominican Republic's flag is the only one with a holy bible on it Woodrow Wilson had a Doctorate Degree and was nicknamed The School Master The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for weddings and honeymoons
