CONVENTIONS AND TYPES OF BLOG Blogs today are more interactive for today s internet users as blogs now contain hyperlinks which can promote your social media like Zoella who has hyperlinks for her YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat to name a few. Also, most blogs contain a comment section where users can give feedback and opinions on subjects and talk to the blogger. Types of Blog include: Food Health Fashion and Lifestyle (Zoella s blog matches these two) Research Travel And Many more
BLOGS AND VLOGS: HOW SEMIOTICS IS APPLIED Roland Barthes theory of semiotics can be applied to blogs by the denotations such as the colour scheme and the images presented on the homepage and then what connotations can be made of them. In vlogs, images and the mise-en-scene in the video can convey a message of the person vlogging or what is being talked about. Furthermore, a vlogger s body language and facial expressions can be analysed as well as it helps give the vlogger a sense of identity.
GAUNTLETTS THEORY OF IDENTITY: ZOELLA Zoella uses her YouTube account to make themed videos mainly centred around clothing, make-up and festive videos such as Gingerbread Christmas Light Cupcakes. In all of her thumbnails, Zoella is always seen smiling and most of the time seen holding the subject matter of her video and it is this which helps construct her identity and how she is perceived by an audience.
HALLS REPRESENTATION THEORY APPLIED TO ZOELLA In terms of analysing the blog when looking through Zoella s post Anxiety- The Update the photographic images combined with the written text create the idea that Zoella is confident encourages her readers and followers to be as well and the photos of Zoella smiling reinforce that.
REPRESENTATION OF GENDER: ZOELLAS BLOG In my opinion, in some circumstances it does reinforce some gender stereotypes for example the colour scheme of light pink is stereotyped as a predominantly female associated colour and the blog features many baking and make up articles which are stereotypically female activities. However, I wouldn t say it uses a gender specific mode of address. The topics include fashion, cooking and trips that Zoella has been on and I would say these activities are centred towards female teens.
ONLINE MEDIA AND HOW INCOME IS MADE ON IT Recent technological changes has benefited many people and big companies when it comes to the financial side of online media for example independent content creators can advertise and reach a wider audience which will gain them more views and more of a following and that will earn them more money. Also, big corporations such as Google who own companies such a YouTube earn more money and publicity because of popular content creators bring their fans and followers onto their platforms. Content creators can earn money in numerous ways. They earn money from the platforms they are releasing their content to due to the amount of subscribes and web traffic they create (amount of views on YouTube). Channels can monetise their videos with adverts in exchange for part of the advertising revenue and channels can be sponsored by companies and businesses for example Let s Play channels.
ONLINE MEDIA REGULATIONS All media has to be regulated so certain audiences can t see sensitive material and content. This means that rules and regulations are set up for content creators and if they break these rules then their video will be removed and the creator could face further punishment. YouTube has it s own set of Community Guidelines which prohibits nudity or sexual content, violent and graphic content, hate speech and content, spam misleading content and scams.
HOW ZOELLA TARGETS AND ATTRACTS AUDIENCES One thing Zoella does is she uses the thumbnails of her videos to appeal to audiences. She does this using pictures of her face (using different facial expression with each video) next to the subject of her video to appeal to audiences or she sometimes collaborates with other popular content creators to appeal to a wider fanbase and gain more followers and subscribers. Audiences can interact and participate with Zoella in numerous ways as well in events and conventions such as VidCon, Q and A sessions and meet-and- greets with fans.
GEORGE GERBNERS CULTIVATION THEORY Younger people today spend more time on online media forms rather than traditional media forms such as television. Also, an Ofcom report in 2016 found that 5-15 year olds are spending an increasing amount of time on YouTube which is were Zoella mainly bases her content and it was found that vlogging is a popular video category and format amongst teens meaning that there is a high chance that Zoella is shaping and influencing the teen generations of today with her vlogs and blogs.
