Phonics and Early Reading: A note to parents If your child did not pass the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1 or still finds Reading challenging, then your child will benefit from this Phonics Power Point rather than the Guided Reading Power Point. On this Power Point, you will find phonics mats with the digraphs and trigraphs that children should recognise by sight; please continue to practice quick recall of these and encourage your child to spot these in words too. The Tricky Word Mats are also included for the children to practise reading quickly by sight and for spelling. There are 6 tasks set; how you do these is up to you. You may want to do one a day, although some are short tasks or games so you may want to do more than one a day. You may want to do a few daily. Repetition of these key skills is key to developing early reading and writing skills so it really doesn t matter how you decided to do them. In addition to tasks set, your child may enjoy playing more games on Phonics Play.
