Operations Approval and Preparations for NSTX-U Research Machine
The ES&H Executive Safety Board has approved NSTX-U operations, with preparations underway for commissioning and research activities. These include coil system qualification, calibration alignments, system commissioning, and upcoming experimental operations. Various stages of the Integrated System Test Plan (ISTP) are being carried out to ensure the machine's readiness for plasma experiments.

Approvals for Operations The ES&H Executive Safety Board (upon recommendation of the Activity Certification Committee - ACC) has approved NSTX-U operations within the bounds of our Safety Assessment Document and Safety Certificate. The NSTX-U Start-Up (OP-NSTX-02) and Coil Energization (ISTP-001 have been exercised to a point to allow the CD-4 plasma using OH, TF(.5T), PF3U/L & PF5. Additional stages of the ISTP will be performed to provide field coil capability for commissioning the machine to support research operations, and then the actual performance of approved XP s. The ACC will still need to review and approve additional NSTX-U capabilities such as: Neutral Beam Injection Boronization with deuterated Trimethylboron (dTMB) using up to 50 grams Introduction of elemental lithium in the NSTX-U Test Cell up to 2kG. NSTX-U August NSTX-U Team Meeting. Engineering Operations 1 August 14, 2015
Preparations for Operations Currently in the 2nd phase of the ISTP Qualify coil systems PF4, PF2U/L & PF1aU/L for operation Limited combined field shots for magnetic diagnostics. Restore PF1cU to service (PF1cL already used to commission Rogowski s) MPTS Rayleigh/Raman Scattering Calibrations Alignments need to be verified. New cameras will help Calibration of this new system will take ~ 5 dedicated days. Vessel Vent in nitrogen for port work Install Argon Purge System TIV s (needed for Lithium) Install new DTI diagnostic Replace Bay B Camera Shutter LITER and MAPP interference checks Bay J window installation for IRVB Bay L port obstruction measurement Window inspection/cleaning if necessary NSTX-U August NSTX-U Team Meeting. Engineering Operations 2 August 14, 2015
Preparations for Operations dTMB Commissioning Provide time/resources for control system commissioning before the start of the bake NSTX-U Vessel Bake Commission system to provide 70C water to PF1B for ~270C tile heating. Bakeout procedure is being updated. Modest temperature ramp times are being specified. Will remain at temperature for a tentative 3 weeks. Recovery from the bake expected to take ~1 week (leak checking, etc.). Switching Power Amplifier (SPA) Re-commissioning SPA s will be tested into a local resistive load during the vessel bake Time will be allotted to re-commissioning the RWM coils during the bake recovery. Coaxial Helicity Injection (CHI) The CHI Capacitor bank has been reassembled and dummy load tested The CHI Control System needs to be updated before integrated system testing CHI operating procedures are being updated. NSTX-U August NSTX-U Team Meeting. Engineering Operations 3 August 14, 2015
Initial Operations 3rd Phase of the ISTP before Research Operations TF (.65T), PF (18kA), and longer pulse lengths. NSTX-U Commissioning A period of plasma operations for machine evaluation, conditioning, and magnetic calibrations NSTX-U Experimental Operations Planning to start first Experimental Proposals (XP s) by October 9th. Scheduled to run 12 weeks in FY16.. NSTX-U August NSTX-U Team Meeting. Engineering Operations 4 August 14, 2015
Heating System Operations Both Neutral Beams are at Lhe temperatures. Neutral Beam #2 N2A Source has just started Beam conditioning at 33kV N2B Source is Beam conditioning and running well at 45kV N2C Source had to be replaced and is in Arc Conditioning Neutral Beam #1 N1A is being prepared to start Arc Conditioning N1B does not have an ion source in place. A fresh spare has been moved to the test stand to begin preliminary electrical tests and Hi-Pots. N1C has a fresh ion source in place and undergoing initial checks before starting conditioning. RF Systems RF Source Conditioning has started. Plan to start antenna conditioning in parallel with the vessel bake. Need Dedicated Conditioning Time on All Systems. NSTX-U August NSTX-U Team Meeting.
