The project aims to enhance cable routing efficiency for the cold electronics on the bottom APAs, necessitating a redesign of the APA frames to accommodate the cable bundles. Through prototype testing and analysis, potential reductions in data and power cable quantities are being explored to streamline the wiring process without compromising performance.

  1. Cabling the bottom APAs David Christian 7/17/18

  2. Status Our plan is for cables to the cold electronics on the bottom APAs to pass through the side frames of a pair of APAs (one hung from another). The current cable bundles will not fit through the protoDUNE APA frames. The APA group has a new design for the APA frame in which the 4 x3 stainless sections are replaced with 4 x4 sections. They do not want to consider making the frames using even larger box members (4 x5 or 4 x6 ) because standard sections with dimensions larger than 4 x4 have much thicker walls. After pull tests with protoDUNE cable bundles and a mock-up of two 4 x4 APA side frames, it is clear that the current cable bundles will not fit through 4 x4 APA side frames but a ~10% reduction in the cable bundle cross section might be sufficient to allow cables to be routed through the frames.

  3. Can we reduce the number of data cables? ProtoDUNE data cable bundle = 12 twinax. COLDATA FEMB 4 1.28 Gbps data links (2/COLDATA) 2 64 MHz clocks (1/COLDATA) 2 fast command (1/COLDATA) 3 I2C-like control (clock, data-in, data-out) (Shared by 2 COLDATA) 1 multipurpose LArASIC output (12) How might this number be reduced? 2.56 Gbps data links (save 2 twinax) Share 64 MHz clock and fast command (save 2 twinax)

  4. Data cables (continued) CRYO FEMB 4 1 Gbps links (2/CRYO) 2 Clock (1/CRYO) 3 SACI (Control) (shared by 2 CRYO chips) 2 (Actually 4 single ended control lines SACI SEL (2), GR, SRO) (11) How might this be reduced? Faster data link (save 2 twinax) Share clock (save 1 twinax)

  5. Can we reduce the number of power cables? ProtoDUNE power cables = 9 twisted pairs @ 20 AWG. It is likely that both the 3-ASIC FEMB and the CRYO FEMB could use many fewer cables for power. For example, Kurtis proposed using 4 pairs; 2x2.5V digital + 2x2.5V analog. Sense wires are also desired, but these could be thinner wire. One question will be how much IR drop is acceptable.
