Oral Traditions & Storytelling of English First Peoples
Cultures passed down through generations with spoken words encompassing various forms like poems, songs, stories, and histories. Oral traditions include practical skills such as housebuilding, hunting, and medicinal plant collection. These stories, a vital part of cultural transmission, bind families and shape identities through repetition and storytelling. Different types of stories exist within each cultural group, from regular to sacred and extraordinary tales. Trickster figures like Coyote and Raven play significant roles in First Nations' stories, showcasing paradoxical characteristics. Creation stories explain the origins of the world, emphasizing spirituality and the ongoing renewal of life.
