  1. ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOLS Goals for Hiring & Diversity Justice United Meeting April 11, 2019

RECENT MILESTONES Passage of Policy 1030 Equity in Education The Board Commits to: Actively recruit, support, and retain a diverse workforce Actively train and support all administrators, teachers, and staff in implementing this policy including creating culturally affirming and relevant classrooms and schools Engage with staff, student, parents/guardians, and the entire community to build and sustain a culture emblematic of the ideals of this Equity Policy Board approves Chief Equity Officer Position which has been posted. 82 applications received with interviews beginning this week Board will soon review a draft of a new Student Code of Conduct that will embed Restorative Practices with the goal of eliminating disparities in discipline practices Professional development for all staff will accompany the new Code.

  3. EQUITY BUDGET REQUEST The current ask that was approved by our Board of Education is now $180,000 because the Chief Equity Officer position has already been established in our continuation budget. Total line item ask is for Professional Development in partnership with CHCCS REI Groundwater Training focuses on understanding the realities of systemic racism as a predictor of outcomes in all institutions. Beyond Diversity Training understanding the impact of race on student learning and investigate the role that racism plays institutionalizing achievement disparities. Leadership for Racial Equity Development deepening the will, skill, knowledge and capacity of administrators to lead, oversee and manage the dynamic processes of systemic racial equity transformation

  4. RECRUITMENT & TALENT MANAGEMENT Director of Human Capital Management supervised by the Chief Equity Officer will drive diversity recruitment efforts as a part of the district equity plan ($125,000 salary & benefits) Tuition & Programming grow-our-own aimed at growing classified staff into teacher positions through a one-year alternative teacher preparation program that results in certification ($59,000) Special Education Signing Bonus ($20,000)

  5. HIRING BI-LINGUAL FRONT OFFICE STAFF Currently setting up meetings with various leaders in the community to understand the best venues to post flyers and positions. Challenge: Finding true bi-lingual candidates and this is an area of assistance we request from Justice United All job descriptions for front office staff and office support positions have now been changed to reflect this need.

  6. RECRUITMENT & RETENTION TASK FORCE Our desire is to have a small group of both internal and external stakeholders that represent the diversity in our community to advise our recruitment efforts in the district. We see this as a part of our district equity plan The creation of our plan will be led by the Chief Equity Officer We will work with the Board of Education on their desires for the make-up of the task force as well as the process for application/selection.
