  2. Methodology Survey administration: February of 2016. Sampling strategy: schools and classrooms were selected to generate statistically representative county- level estimates. Final sample size was 1,608 across grades 6 through 12. The margin of error is less than 4.7 percentage points for M.S. prevalence rates and 5.0 percentage points for H.S. prevalence rates.

  6. Key Findings With overall prevalence rates of 35.6% for lifetime use and 16.1% for past-30-day use, alcohol is the most commonly used drug among Orange County students. After alcohol, students reported vaping/e-cigarettes (19.3% lifetime and 6.3% past-30-day) and marijuana (19.7% lifetime and 9.1% past-30-day) as the most commonly used drugs. 14.4% of high school students reported blacking out after drinking on one or more occasions. For other ATOD categories, past-30-day prevalence ranges from 2.0% for cigarettes to 0.1% for methamphetamine and steroids.

  20. Key Findings In Orange County, past-30-day alcohol use was reported at 16.1%, compared to 18.3% across the statewide sample. Binge drinking declined from 15.5% in 2006 to 5.6% in 2016. Past-30-day cigarette use declined from 9.5% in 2006 to 2.0% in 2016. In the past 30 days, 15.0% of high school students have ridden in a car with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol, and 23.6% have ridden with a driver under the influence of marijuana.

  28. Key Findings In Orange County, 5.8% of surveyed students reported the use of any illicit drug other than marijuana in the past 30 days, compared to 6.8% across the statewide sample. Past-30-day inhalant use decreased from 4.3% in 2006 to 1.6% in 2016. Among high school students, past-30-day synthetic marijuana use decreased from 4.7% in 2012 to 0.7% in 2016. Among middle school students, 2.3% reported the use of inhalants in the past 30 days, a rate higher than any other illicit drug (and equal to marijuana).

  33. Key Findings In Orange County, prevalence rates for Being Arrested (1.8%), Attempting to Steal a Vehicle (1.3%), and Taking a Handgun to School (0.9%) are less than 2.0%. Higher prevalence rates were reported for Getting Suspended (8.8%) and Attacking Someone with Intent to Harm (6.9%). In Orange County, 27.3% of students have been socially bullied, 12.9% have been physically bullied, and 7.8% have been cyber bullied. 3.4% of students have belonged to a gang, and 1.2% of high school students are currently gang members.

High school students reported the lowest rates of protection for the Family Rewards for Prosocial Involvement (55%), School Rewards for Prosocial Involvement (56%), and Religiosity (56%) scales.
