Organic- little to no use of pesticide or antibiotics, using equipment that is thoroughly cleaned or different from non-organic, livestock around is organic, a measured distance from non- organic fields to prevent contamination GMO- genetically modified organism FDA regulated For food- plants made with biotechnology to enhance the product i.e. Changing the seed of the plant so it is more resistant to common pests FDA found in 1992 that they had no reason to believe that GMO plants were different enough from non-GMO plants to make them labeled different

Organic vs. Certified Organic USDA regulated USDA may not necessarily know who is selling organic if they are not certified Not everyone is required to be certified If gross income is less than $5000/ year certification is not required Supposed to be following same legalities Certified Organic- Non- GMO Natural Any company can put natural on their product, is not restricted wording Non-GMO Does not mean it is organic

Always wash produce, no matter what is on it Personal beliefs and preference Industry on both sides have too much money to know what is factual Getting 5 servings a day most important Cost difference Personal and community gardens Bringing farmers markets in the community Does not mean it is organic or non-GMO just because it is from a farmer s market

  4. Gluten-proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and some other grains that helps maintain shape. Gluten free diets started because of allergies and sensitivities Will not make you lose weight Bad eating choices can be make regardless Dangers Wheat flour is fortified with b-vitamins and iron, which was required by the FDA- cut down on neural tube defects in babies by 80% due to folic acid Substitutions will lack fortification

  5. Vegetarian- no consumption of animals Vegan- no consumption of animals or animal by-products Milk, eggs, honey Nutrients that will be harder to include in diet Protein, iron, calcium, zinc and iron Bad eating habits are not due to having a diet with animal products, excluding meat from your diet is a personal decision

  6. Be aware of cross-contamination Make other s aware when you re not in charge of your intake Whole foods should not be eliminated from the diet without medical reason or without replacing nutrients that need to be

  7. Does not exist Balance and variety Every body is different and will react differently to different foods, make your choice personal.
