DEVELOPMENT OF SIN JAMES 1:12-15 TEMPTATION James 1:14 NKJV 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. DESIRE ENTICEMENT an opportunity and encouragement to satisfy the desire TEMPTATION = DESIRE + OPPORTUNITY Not a SIN to be TEMPTED Hebrews 4:15; 2:18
DEVELOPMENT OF SIN JAMES 1:12-15 SIN James 1:15 "When desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin" Becomes SIN when we ACT and YIELD to temptation SIN = DESIRE + OPPORTUNITY + ACTION
DEVELOPMENT OF SIN JAMES 1:12-15 DEATH - "...and sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death." Isaiah 59:2 iniquities have separated you from your God Revelation 21:8 the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." DESIRE + OPPORTUNITY + ACTION + NO FORGIVENESS = DEATH
OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIN SIN will have overcome us if we receive final punishment- Revelation 21:8 We will overcome sin IF we can avoid this punishment! How can we be SURE to overcome SIN? By Stopping It Development At Any One Of The 3 Points Leading To Final Punishment
HOW TO OVERCOME SIN Change Our Desires - Part of Christian s Growth Romans 12:1,2 Galatians 5:24 crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Word of God ALWAYS helped overcome sin Psalm 119:11 Jesus used it Matthew 4:3-10 Psalm 116:12-14; 119:104
HOW TO OVERCOME SIN Limit Our Opportunities - Ask for Providential Help Matthew 6:13; 26:41 Cooperate with God by: Avoid Situations That Excite Wrongful Desires Follow example of David Psalm 101:3,4; Job 31:1 David set good example Psalm 101:6,7 Paul adds his warning 1 Corinthians 15:33
HOW TO OVERCOME SIN Exercise Self-Control - Galatians 5:22,23 fruit of the Spirit Acts 2:38 the gift of the Holy Spirit [Acts 3:19] Ephesians 3:16 strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man," Romans 8:12,13 if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." HOW TO OVERCOME SIN Obtain Forgiveness- 1 John 2:1,2 Acts 2:38 Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. Acts 22:16 be baptized, and wash away your sins Acts 8:22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you." 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us {our} sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
OBSERVATIONS ABOUT OVERCOMING SIN God is Willing and Able to Help Us Overcome SIN! God provides help to Control Our Desires as we Renew our Minds! God helps us to limit the opportunities through His providence as we pray for such! God helps us to exercise self-control over our actions through His Spirit strengthening the inner man! God helps us to obtain forgiveness through the blood of His Son as we repent and pray!
OBSERVATIONS ABOUT OVERCOMING SIN 2 Thessalonians 3:3 NKJV 3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
SINS OF OMISSION Failing to do what is RIGHT James 4:17 Changing our DESIRES so we want to do what is RIGHT! In Baptism FREED from the power of sin! Romans 6:1-23 Might still suffer temporal consequences Galatians 6:7-9 Hebrews 3:12-14 hardened through the deceitfulness of sin Hebrews 10:26-31 if we sin willfully it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. James 1:12 he will receive the crown of life
THINK.. Are you engaged in a daily Bible study program? Do you watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation? Do you avoid circumstances and companions that you know would entice you to sin? Do you pray that God will strengthen you by His Spirit in the inner man? Do you ask God daily to forgive your sins, and help you overcome sin in your life?
