  1. The Second Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

  2. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians Time and Place of Writing: + St. Paul wrote this epistle in the year A.D. 57, few months following the first one, from a city within the region of Macedonia: Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia (2 Corinthians 8:1) + The epistle was carried to the Corinthians by Titus: But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord (2 Corinthians 8:16-17)

  3. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians Purpose of Writing: + The epistle was occasioned by the report brought back by Titus, who informed St. Paul as of how the rebuke that letter contained worked out for their repentance. Though the report was encouraging, but evidently it also brought troubling news that some at Corinth were questioning Paul's authority as an apostle. This doubt might have been planted by Judaizing teachers who seemed to follow Paul and attempted to undermine his teaching concerning the Law. Hence, the apostle wrote this epistle to: 1. Show them his joy for their repentance: Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance (2 Corinthians 7:9)

  4. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians 2. Urge them to accept the sinner who repented: You ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ, lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices (2 Corinthians 2:7,9-11) 3. Defend his apostolic rights: For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles (2 Corinthians 11:5) + It is to be noted that this letter is the most biographical and least doctrinal of St. Paul's epistles. It tells us more about St. Paul as

  5. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians a person and as a minister, where it never happened that St. Paul spoke about himself in any other epistle more than this one. Contents: I. Introduction: (Ch. 1) 1. Greeting: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God (2 Corinthians 1:1) 2. Comfort in Sufferings: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation,

  6. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) II. Concept of Service: (Chs. 2-5) 1. Showing Love to the Sinner: Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him (2 Corinthians 2:8) 2. Being the Fragrance of Christ: Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved

  7. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians and among those who are perishing (2 Corinthians 2:14-15) 3. Service of the Spirit, Not the Letter: Who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6) 4. Transforming to the Image of Christ: But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18)

  8. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians 5. Do not Lose Heart: Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart (2 Corinthians 4:1) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us (2 Corinthians 4:7) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17) While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the

  9. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians things which are not seen are eternal (2 Corinthians 4:18) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Corinthians 5:10) 6. Ambassadors for Christ: Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ s behalf, be reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:20)

  10. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians III. Marks of his Ministry: (Chs. 6-7) 1. No Offense: We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed (2 Corinthians 6:3) 2. A Role Model: But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, by the word of truth, by the power of God as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things (2 Corinthians 6:4-7,10)

  11. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians 3. Being Strict, But With Love: For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it (2 Corinthians 7:8) For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death (2 Corinthians 7:10) For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! (2 Corinthians 7:11)

  12. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians IV. Giving to the Poor: (Chs. 8-9) That in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality (2 Corinthians 8:2) But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6-7) V. Defending his Apostleship: (Chs. 10-12) 1. Commendation by the Lord: But he who glories, let him glory in the Lord. For not he who commends himself is approved, but whom the Lord commends (2 Corinthians 10:17-18)

  13. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians 2. Exposing the False Prophets: For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13-14) 3. Suffering for Christ: Are they ministers of Christ? I speak as a fool I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the

  14. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation? (2 Corinthians 11:23-29) 4. The Vision of Paradise: And I know such a man whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter (2 Corinthians 12:3-4) 5. Boasting in Infirmities:

  15. The 2ndEpistle to the Corinthians And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me: My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) VI. Conclusion and Greetings: (Ch. 13) Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed you are disqualified (2 Corinthians 13:5)
