  4. Questions??

  5. Spring Training What you need to know: We bus the kids to the Occoquan on school days. We do not bus the kids on weekdays with no school or an early release. They will still practice on early release days, so transportation will be up to you. We load the buses at 3:30, in front of the school, and leave for the park at 3:45. We will leave the park at around sunset. In February and early March, that s usually around 6:30, so they will be back to Langley around 7:00-7:15. In April and May, we leave around 7:30, so they re back around 8:00-8:15 What does this mean for you? They are going to come home even more tired and hungry than during winter conditioning Saturday mornings are going to be long if you re driving both ways. It s an excellent opportunity to bond with other crew parents also stuck in Lorton for a couple of hours

  6. What does this mean for your kid? They no longer have the break between school and practice, but they have time on the bus. Some of them even actually discuss their homework. The intensity of the training will ramp up moving the boat is harder than erging. They re not going to have a lot of time for other stuff. What do you need to do? Send them to school with lots of snacks Make a plan for dinner. They re getting home later than usual and starving Work with your carpools to make a plan for Saturdays. What does your kid need to do? Dress appropriately: o Slides or crocs o Tight shorts or long pants no loose-legged shorts that can get caught in the seat gears o Layers, especially for the cooler days o Lots and lots of socks they re going through at least 2 pair a day Bring extra clothes Bring snacks for both before and after practice

  7. Questions??

  8. Volunteering What you need to know: Crew season for your kids is volunteer season for you. This is where crew becomes a family activity. The season does not happen without a lot of volunteers. The schools crew teams and the regattas are managed by parent volunteers. What does this mean for you? Each crew family is required to volunteer for four events: One chaperone turn (you ll get instructions) One VASRA volunteer duty (you ll get instructions) Two elective duties What does this mean for your kid? They can have a season. It s just that simple. What do you need to do? Meet your volunteer obligations Watch the newsletter for volunteer requests Check the Volunteer options on the website to see what you might like to do What does your kid need to do? Nothing. This is on you.

  18. Q & A Updates & Burning Questions Ergathon Q: For Ergathon score keeping, do we need to know what to do? A: No, you ll have someone show you. At the score table, you just need to know how to enter data from the score sheets into an Excel spreadsheet. The Erg Reset & Scorer volunteer will write down the rower s race information from the erg monitor and turn it in to you, and you input that information into the spreadsheet. Q: For Ergathon this weekend, there is a parent competition as well? Do you have to sign up or just be there? A: Just be there. When they call for the parent s race, just sit on an erg and get ready to row. The parents, coaches and coxes all row 500m races; the rowers do 2ks, just like in practice

  19. Spring Break Training Q: Is there carpooling for spring break training? A: We have the list of people who indicated at registration that they were interested in carpooling. We can provide you with that list; just email us and ask for it. Q: What about if you want off the list? A: If you ve already found a carpool, or no longer want to carpool, or for any reason no longer want to be contacted about joining a carpool, email us and we can take you off the list Q: Is it possible to miss for an athlete to miss just one regatta during spring break due to a medical traveling? A: Absolutely! We really want the kids there, but some things are much more important! Just have your child add the dates they won t be there on the attendance sheet as soon as they know it. The more notice the coaches get on absences, the better they like it. SafeSport Q: For the SafeSport training, what role do we list? A: Either parent or volunteer is fine; the obligations and requirements are the same

  20. Spring Training Q: Who should the student email ahead of the water practices if they know they have a conflict on one day of theweek every week when they can t make to the water practice for that day? A: They need to put that on the coaches attendance sheet. Don t email, they want it on the sheet. The kids have access. Q: What do the parents do during the practice at the park? A: As we all know, there s not tons to do in the Lorton area, but you can do whatever you want. You don t need to stay there there s nowhere comfortable to sit and no one loves the portapotties. The park is lovely in the spring, and there is a lot of great hiking/fishing at Sandy Run, at Fountainhead Regional Park and at Burke Lake park. Both Occoquan and Burke are a 15-minute drive, and there s a strip shopping center nearby with a Starbucks, a Giant, a nail salon, a couple of places to eat. Q: If practice is cancelled due to weather, will the kids have conditioning at Langley? A: It depends on when it s cancelled. If it s cancelled before they leave the school, they will practice in the Science Hall, like winter conditioning. If they re already at the park, they will just come back to the school and be done for the day.

  21. Q: What is the name of the place where the teams practice? Is it findable on Google Maps? A: The park is called Sandy Run Regional Park, and it is findable on Google Maps. You can also find a link to it on Google Maps from the Info page and Contact Us page, and a link to the Sandy Run website on the Contact Us page Q: Do freshmen practice on Wednesdays? I believe the handbook says Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday A: Whoops! Thanks for catching that!! That will need to be updated. We used to do it that way, to help them out with the adjustment to the time commitment, but we found out that not only did they not need the adjustment time, having them practice every day helped not only with their development as rowers but with their team bonding and identification as fully part of the team, so we stopped it. Volunteering Q: Do parents have to be certified to volunteer for VASRA? A: No. None of the VASRA roles are predictable or recurring which is the key criteria for needing SafeSport certification. You also don t need to be chaperone-certified by FCPS for VASRA duties either.

  22. Q: Does Tag Day & the Ergathon count towards our volunteering minimum? A: Ergathon does; Tag Day does not. Tag Day is considered one of those things that we all need to do to keep the program going and lower your registration fees; it s more an obligation than anything else, really. Q: Do we need to bring the volunteer badge for chaperone? A: No. You never need to bring it anywhere. You just need to have been awarded it. We are the ones monitoring the chaperones, not FCPS, and we know whether you ve been certified, so we don t need to see it. Other Questions Q: Will there be a spring crew store? A: Yes, but we don t know exactly when. We know that a lot of you are interested in crew team swag now that your kids have committed to the team, especially the jackets. We are in the process of looking at the options and putting together items we can offer. It s a more complicated process than it seems like it should be. The suppliers give us a limited stock available, so that they don t run out, so our store will only be open for a short time, usually less than a week. We will give you plenty of notice, flood you with emails, about the store status when the time comes. We will pass on the updates as soon as we have them.
