Parent peer supporters, trained advocates who share similar experiences, provide emotional connections, informational support, and help navigate various systems. PAC also offers certification and referrals through regional coordinators to expand access to services."

  1. Parent Advocacy Connection NAMI Ohio PAC Parent Peer Support

  2. PAC hope, guidance, and empowerment for parents and care givers of . Children with a lived mental health condition Children with a developmental disability Children involved in child welfare system Children involved in juvenile justice system PAC participation is voluntary Help is provided in navigating the system of care

  3. Who are the Parent Peer Supporters(advocates)? A parent peer supporter is a parent or care giver who has a child who has lived experience in the system of care (mental health, juvenile justice, developmental disabilities, child welfare, etc.) An advocate is trained in their advocacy role. They are typically volunteers and receive a stipend for attending meetings with parents They also receive reimbursement for travel.

  4. Parent Peer Supporters Offer an emotional connection from someone who has lived a similar experience Provide encouragement, informational and educational support Equip the parent, teaching them tools for communications, Teaching them about the systems their family is involved in. Attend Juvenile Justice, ODJFS, ODDD, School, any meeting or hearing that the parent feels they need support in. Can provide information on support groups Support during times of crisis Systems navigation

  5. And Information: Typical contact: Two meetings per month Average age of child: 11 but ranges from 0 to 18. Phone contact with parent(s) 191 cases open first two quarters of CY18 Most cases open 6 months or less Can be reopened if needed. Carryover from prior quarter: 152 39 Parent Peer Supporters 5 vacant positions for regional coordinators

  6. Parent Peer Certification We are creating a parent peer supporter certification process. Led by NAMI Ohio, with the support of ODJFS, ODD and Ohio MHAS is creating a certification process for parent peers. Will go live across the state by July 1 Will provide training and keep a data base of trained peers

  7. REFERRALS Can be made through PAC regional coordinators no longer required to go through FCFC directors. Can be made through Family and Children First Councils Not statewide availability at this time but identified and interested parents can be trained. Currently 39 counties have access to PAC services.
