Present Perfect & Past 2 With finished times (like yesterday, in 1990, etc.), we do not use the present perfect, we use past simple These times do not extend to present time (NOW) So we say: I played football a lot when I was a child. NOT * I have played football a lot when I was a Child. ( my childhood is a finished period of time) BUT I have attended two lectures today. ( today is an unfinished time)
Simply put, USE THE PAST SIMPLE WITH FINISHED & DEFINITE TIMES; USE THE PRESENT PERFECT WITH UNFINISHED & INDEFINITE TIMES
When = Definite time = Past When did the lecture start? It started at 10:30. When did you arrive? I arrived at 10:25. What time= Definite = Past What time did we last meet? We last met in February. What time did you visit Ali? I visited him on Friday.
More Examples: I haven t studied hard recently.( These days) I have never eaten pacha. (UP TO NOW) BUT: I saw you in Ashar last Friday. We had a nice lecture in this room on poetry.
