MY BACKGROUND 33 years at CHOP Oldest children s hospital in the nation 600+ beds, 52 care network locations, 20,000 employees Bedside RN for 20 years 13 years as Patient Safety Manager 2
MY TIMELINE PRIOR TO CURRENT ROLE My mom made me work in a nursing home before she d send me to college for nursing. Thought she was nuts then and now see it was the best decision she ever made. #listentoyourmotherLOL Graduated with Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Penn State Nursing schools is no joke- need to balance heavy workload and social life, while also being awake at 6 am to start clinical rotations Spent 3 years on general medical unit, then moved to GI procedural unit for 17 years. 1985 1989 1989-2009
HIGH SCHOOL COURSES THAT HELP YOU Math Peds medication doses are weight dependent; need to calculate to ensure accuracy Biology Anatomy, physiology Chemistry Useful in pharmacology, understanding how medications work/interact Psychology or sociology Gives you a better understanding into what makes people tick 4
NURSING DEGREE OPTIONS APRN- advanced degree- prescribing authority RN- diploma, associates, bachelors- directs care at the bedside LPN- works under supervision of RN- 12 months Nursing assistant- assists w/ activities of daily living, unlicensed, but can be certified 5
