The Peoria County 4-H Awards & Scholarships recognize outstanding leadership, scholarship, physical fitness, and character in high school students. These awards, including the National Leadership Award, aim to inspire young individuals to reach their highest potential and make a positive impact through their service and leadership.   3. County 4-H Awards National Leadership Award Previously the I Dare You Award Background Mr. William H. Danforth, founder of the American Youth Foundation, was a successful businessman who lived 85 full years practicing his philosophy of Stand Tall, Think Tall, Smile Tall and Live Tall each day. He challenges young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through their lives of leadership and service. In his book, Mr Danforth encourages the owner to pass the book along to ten friends after they have read it to encourage them also to reach their highest potential. This award will be presented to the winner during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. (Note- This award is not a 4-H award. 4-H is one of the many organizations to whom the award committee of the American Youth Foundation offers the award). County 4-H Awards National Leadership Award Previously the I Dare You Award Award Criteria: 4-H member should demonstrate evidence of outstanding Leadership, Scholarship, Physical Fitness and Character Must be a high school freshman or older Members may receive this award only once in their 4-H career Application Procedure: To apply for the National Leadership Award / I Dare You Award the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually September 30). Peoria County 4-H I Dare You Award Application Application cover sheet & story covering the following areas: Leadership, Scholarship, Physical Fitness, and Character Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover sheet. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered. Deadline: Due to Extension office by September 30 each year.

County 4-H Awards Holstein-Friesian Association Award Background The Illinois Holstein-Friesian Association provides certificates and medals to members who own and exhibit Holstein cattle for their 4-H projects. Criteria: Members must be enrolled in the Dairy project, own (lease for Peoria County) and exhibit Holstein cattle at the county 4-H show. First time recipients of this recognition will receive a pin: previous recipients will receive a certificate. Awards are presented at the county 4-H Awards Program in November. Application Procedure: To apply for the Holstein-Friesian Association Award, the following item needs to be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually September 30 of each year). Peoria County 4-H Year Focus Award Application (write other on application) or recommendation from Superintendent (Peoria County) Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover sheet. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered.

  6. County 4-H Awards First Year Swine Award Background This award was established to recognize an outstanding 4-H member enrolled in the Swine Project for the first time. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Must be the first year a member is enrolled in the Swine project (any age). Member must have exhibited a Swine project at the past 4-H Fair. Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedures: To apply for the First Year Swine Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Peoria County 4-H Year Focus Award Application (write other on application) Application story should be for the Swine Project for the past 4-H year only Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover sheet. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered

County 4-H Awards James Daugherty 4-H Crops & Soils and/or Horticulture Award Background James Daugherty, retired Extension Specialist in the areas of Crops & Soils and Horticulture will award a Plaque Award to the 4-Her who has excelled in the Crops & Soils and/or Horticulture project area. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Member must be currently enrolled in a Crops & Soil and/or Horticulture/Floriculture project Member must have exhibited a project in the award area at the 4-H Fair during the current year Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedure: To apply for the James Daughtery 4-H Crops & Soils and/or Horticulture Award, the following items need to be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Completed James Daugherty Crops & Soils and or Horticulture Award application (available at the Extension office). Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered

  8. County 4-H Awards Marsha Deppermann Memorial Award Background The Marsha Deppermann Memorial Award was established to recognize a 4-H er with an Outstanding 4-H Home Economics Program each year. This includes the project areas: Foods & Nutrition, Health, Clothing and Interior Design. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: 4-H er must be currently enrolled in at least one of the award project areas: Foods & Nutrition, Health, Clothing and Interior Design 4-H er must have currently exhibited projects at the 4-H Fair in at least one of the award project areas Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedures: To apply for the Marsha Deppermann Memorial Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Peoria County 4-H Year Focus Award Application Cover Sheet Application outline and story covering at least one of the following areas: Foods & Nutrition,Health, Clothing and Interior Design for the past 4-H year.   9. County 4-H Awards Leatha Morris Memorial Award Background The Leatha Morris Award was established to recognize a 4-H er with the best 4-H Foods and Nutrition Program this year. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: 4-H er must be currently enrolled in a Food & Nutrition project 4-H er must have exhibited a Food(s)& Nutrition project at the past 4-H Fair Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedure: To apply for the Leatha Morris Memorial Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Peoria County 4-H Year Focus Award Application Cover Sheet (Contact the Extension office) Application outline and story covering the Foods project area for the past 4-H year. Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover page. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered.

  10. County 4-H Awards Sandra Baughman-Barton Memorial Award Background The Sandra Baughman-Barton Award was established to recognize a youth for Outstanding 4-H Junior Leadership. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: 4-H member should exhibit outstanding leadership characteristics 4-H member does not need to be enrolled in a Leadership project. Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedures: To apply for the Sandra Baughman-Barton Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Peoria County 4-H year Focus Award Application Cover Sheet Application outline and story for all leadership activities for the past 4-H year. This should include all 4-H club, county, multi-county, and state 4-H activities and community, school and other activities 4-H club, county, multi-county, and state 4-H activities and community, school and other activities. Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover page. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered.

County 4-H Awards Sharon Iberg Ludolph Memorial Award Background The Sharon Iberg Ludolph Memorial Award was established to recognize a 4-H er with an Outstanding 4-H Home Economics Program each year. This includes the project areas: Foods & Nutrition, Health, Clothing and Interior Design. This award will be presented during the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: 4-H er must be currently enrolled in at least one of the award project areas: Foods & Nutrition, Health, Clothing and Interior Design 4-H er must have currently exhibited projects at the 4-H Fair in the award project areas Members may receive this award more than once. Application Procedures: To apply for the Sharon Iberg Ludolph Memorial Award, the following items need to be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Peoria County 4-H year Focus Award Application Cover Sheet (Contact the Extension office) Application outline and story covering at least one of the following areas: Foods, Child Care, Clothing and Interior Design for the past 4-H year. Applicant should not put their name anywhere except on the cover sheet. Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered.

  12. County 4-H Awards Jim Daugherty 4-H Leadership & Community Service Award Background The South West Kiwanis Club of Peoria is the sponsor of the 4-H Leadership and Community Service Award. The award was created to recognize and honor youth for their commitment of service to others through leadership and community service projects and to honor James Daugherty for his commitment to Kiwanis and the 4-H Program. Award Criteria: This award is available to all current 4-H members age 8 18. There will be two awards presented. Awards will be for $250 each and paid directly to the award recipient. One award recipient will be selected from the 8 12 year old age group and the 2ndaward recipient will be selected from the 13 18 year old age group.

  13. County 4-H Awards Jim Daugherty 4-H Leadership & Community Service Award Application Procedures: To apply for the Jim Daugherty 4-H Leadership & Community Service Award, the following items need to be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by late September). Completed Jim Daugherty 4-H Leadership & Community Service Award Application including front page of personal information (name, address, etc.) Maximum of four (4) pages (does not include the front page), single sided that provide answers to questions included in the application. Two (2) written recommendation letters, enclosed in sealed envelopes with the applicant s name on the front of the envelope. One recommendation must be from a 4-H volunteer or a U of I Extension staff member; the second recommendation must be from school staff member or an individual in your community. Recommendation letters should not be from individuals related to the applicant. Recommendation letters should focus on leadership demonstrated and community service involvement of the applicant. Include complete contact information on individuals who wrote recommendation letters (name, address, phone # & e-mail). Completed applications & recommendation letters must be received no later than September 30 of the year applying. The winner will be notified by October 30 with details of the recognition. The award will be presented at a the S-W Kiwanis Club meeting and at the Peoria County 4-H Recognition of Excellence Awards Program in November.

  14. County 4-H Awards County Secretary of the Year Award Background The responsibility of the office of Secretary requires accurate recording of the minutes of the club meeting and attendance. It may also include recording member participation and business correspondence. The top Club Secretaries are recognized each year at the county level. The award for Secretary of the Year will be presented at the annual Peoria County Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Selection is based on completeness of the Secretary book including member attendance, officers, committees and minutes of all meetings. A 4-H member may receive this award more than once. Application Procedure: To apply for the Secretary of the Year Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). 4-H Secretary s Book Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is required that all secretary books are turned into the Extension office by September 30 each year

  15. County 4-H Awards County Treasurer of the Year Award Background The office of Treasurer carries the responsibility of accurate handling and accounting of the funds of the 4-H club. The top Club Treasurers are recognized each year at the county level. The award for Treasurer of the Year will be presented at the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Selection is based on the completeness and accuracy of the records, neatness, entry of transactions and having all required signatures. Include items such as flags, gavel, etc. Treasurer books should be audited and signed by a member of the club (other than the Treasurer), a parent, and the Leader. A 4-H member may receive this award more than once Application Procedure: To apply for the Treasurer of the Year Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter, (usually by September30). 4-H Treasurer s Book Neatness, grammar and spelling will be considered. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is required that all Treasurer books are turned into the Extension office by September 30 each year

County 4-H Awards County Reporter of the Year Award Background The duties of club Reporter include writing interesting and accurate reports of club meetings and special club activities and sending them to the local newspaper or Extension office for the Clover newsletter. This helps to keep the local community and other 4-H ers informed of the club s activities. The top Club Reporters are recognized each year at the county level. The award for Reporter of the Year will be presented at the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Selection is based on number and quality of news articles submitted to the local newspaper or Extension office for the Clover newsletter whether or not published. A 4-H member may receive this award more than once. Application Procedure: To apply for the Reporter of the Year Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Submit a completed Reporter s Form (sent to 4-H club leaders each year) (Optional) Submit a notebook with copies of all news articles submitted to newspapers or the Extension office, (even if they were not published), and a copy of published articles (if available). Neatness, grammar, spelling and completeness are considered. Obtain a copy of the Reporters Form from 4-H club Leader or the Extension office.

County 4-H Awards for 4-H Clubs County Club Scrapbook of the Year Award Background The duties of club Historian(s) include keeping a scrapbook recording the history/activities of the club for each month of the 4-H year. The top club scrapbooks are recognized each year at the county level. The award for Club Scrapbook of the Year will be presented at the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Selection is based on completeness and presentation of clubs history for the year. 4-H members / clubs may receive this award more than once. Application Procedures: To apply for the Club Scrapbook of the Year Award, the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Completed Club Scrapbook- The scrapbook should creatively display and preserve the history of the clubs activities for the year. This could include photos, and news articles, etc. of club meetings, tours, and members attending county or state 4-H events, etc. It should also include the Historians name. Neatness, grammar, and spelling considered.

  19. County 4-H Awards for 4-H Clubs Peoria County 4-H Club of the Year Award Background Each year one Peoria County 4-H Club is chosen to receive Club of the Year. This award for their outstanding achievements in the 4-H Program for the past 4-H year. All clubs competing for this award will be recognized on the county level. One club will be chosen to receive the 4-H Club of the Year Plaque Award and/or monetary award. These awards will be presented at the annual Peoria County 4- H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Club must be currently enrolled in the 4-H Program. Club must meet State 4-H club requirements: have at least 5 members enrolled, elect club officers, meet at least six times a year and have at least one volunteer leader. Clubs may receive this award more than once. Application Procedure: To apply for this award, a club must have the following items submitted to the Extension office by the deadline stated in the newsletter (usually by September 30), A completed copy of the 4-H Club of the Year Application form (sent to leaders in the awards packet, or may be obtained from the Extension office).

County 4-H Awards for 4-H Clubs National 4-H Week Window Display Contest A great way to promote 4-H in your community during National 4-H Week is to participate in the Peoria County 4-H Window Display Contest. Displays can be in storefront windows, inside bank, school, library lobbies, etc. or any other place where the public can view it. Display must incorporate the theme announced each year. Clubs are encouraged to be creative and come up way to let the public know of the great Adventures in 4-H. Displays must also include club information on meeting dates, times, location and who to contact to join 4-H. All displays must be in place by Monday of National 4-H week and remain in place for judging until late Friday afternoon. Awards are given for 1st, 2nd& 3rdplace displays The Winners are announced and awards given for the top three displays at the 4-H Awards Program in November.

  21. County 4-H Awards for 4-H Clubs Peoria County 4-H Club Spirit Display Contest All Peoria County 4-H Clubs are invited to create a 4-H Spirit Display for the 4-H fair. The goals of the displays are to: Beautify the 4-H show grounds and promote 4-H during the 4-H Fair. It s also a great opportunity for club members to work together on a creative project. All display should include specific information about your club. Include club name as part of display, meeting dates, times, location and leader contact info. Display can be either a table display or a stall display in one of the livestock barns or something different. Please let the Extension office know in advance what type of display your club will have. Set up can be done on early set up day, Monday, or early Wednesday morning, 1stday of fair. Judging will take place on Wednesday, winner announced Friday night following the Fashion review. Winning team receives the traveling Spirit Stick. Also, 1stplace receives $50 and 2ndplace $25 cash awards A Theme is announced each year and display should incorporate the theme Clubs that have a lot of livestock exhibitors can set up their display in the livestock barn Clubs are responsible for bringing all supplies. Judges are looking for Creativity, Neatness, Eye Appeal, Use of Theme, Club Name and 4-H used in display. Be creative and have fun with your display!

  22. County 4-H Awards for 4-H Leaders Peoria County 4-H Leader of the Year Award Background Each year one Peoria County 4-H Leader is chosen to receive Leader of the Year. This award for their outstanding achievements in the 4-H Program for the past year. The recipient of this award is chosen from nominations submitted by 4-H members, parents, other leaders and volunteers. The Leader of the Year Plaque Award is presented at the annual Peoria County 4-H Awards Program in November. Award Criteria: Leader nominated must currently be a leader in the Peoria County 4-H Program. Leader nominated may be either an organizational, project leader or SPIN club leader. Nomination may be made by a 4-H member, 4-H parent, 4-H leader, 4-H superintendent or other 4-H volunteer. Nomination Procedure: To nominate a leader for the Leader of the Year award the following items must be submitted to the Extension office by the deadline announced in the newsletter (usually by September 30). Submit a one page report stating why you think the leader should be selected as the Leader of the Year.

County 4-H Scholarships for Members Doris Schoenbein 4-H Scholarship Award Background The Doris Schoenbein 4-H Scholarship Memorial Award is sponsored for older 4-H members and 4-H Alumni (ages 17 21). The purpose of the award is to recognize youth for exhibiting outstanding leadership & citizenship / community service participation during their 4-H involvement. One winner will be chosen each year to receive the $500 Doris Schoenbein 4-H Scholarship Award. This award is sponsored by the Peoria County 4-H Auction Committee to honor Doris Schoenbein for her many years of dedication as a 4-H Volunteer Leader and support of the 4-H Program. Award Criteria: Applicants must be either current Peoria County 4-H members who are High School Seniors or Peoria County 4-H Alumni that are currently enrolled in an approved post high school educational program (Junior College, 4-year University, Trade School, etc). Applicants must have been enrolled in the Peoria County 4-H program for a minimum of five years. Individuals may receive this award only once. Application Procedure To apply for the Doris Schoenbein 4-H Scholarship award, the following item must be submitted to the Extension office by June 15 each year. The winner will be notified by July 1 with details of the recognition to be held during the Peoria County 4-H Show. Completed Doris Schoenbein 4-H Scholarship Award Application & two recommendation letters. Neatness, grammar, and spelling will be considered.

  25. County 4-H Scholarships for Members 4-H Leadership Scholarship Award Background The 4-H Leadership Scholarship Award is for older 4-H members and 4-H Alumni (ages 17 21). The purpose of the award is to recognize youth for exhibiting outstanding leadership during their 4-H involvement. Two winners will be chosen each year to each receive the $100 4-H Leadership Scholarship Award. This award is sponsored by the Peoria County 4-H Federation Youth thru the Peoria County Auction Committee. Award Criteria: Applicants must be either current Peoria County 4-H members who are High School Seniors or Peoria County 4-H Alumni that are currently enrolled in an approved post high school educational program (Junior College, 4-year University, Trade School, etc). County 4-H Awards Tips for Preparing Your 4-H Award Application (Year Focus Award Application, S-W Kiwanis Leadership / Community Service Award Applications, etc.) Specifications: Printed or done on computer 81/2 x 11 inch white paper Font no less than 10 but preferably 12 characters per inch (Times New Roman) Double-spaced Margins 1 inch minimum on all 4 sides Maximum of 4 pages (one side only) The 4 pages does not include the front page with personal information. The Applications are: Easily updated Easily adaptable for future award applications, scholarships & job applications, etc.

Assisting with the improvement of something in the community Can include individual or group projects that benefited the community Definition of impact: Measure of the tangible and intangible effects (consequences) of one things or entity's action or influence upon another. In other words how will the community service project affect the lives of those in your community? Can include both 4-H club and other group service projects.

Size is anything that can be expressed in quantity: took 360 photos in 2016 Growth shows a progression from the first year to the present: Took 100 pictures in 2017: 250 in 2018, etc. Or progression from simple to more complex What is Knowledge & Skills: Explain the types of things you learned through 4-H projects and experiences Use a variety of verbs, how complex the skill, etc.

County 4-H Awards Tips for Preparing Your 4-H Award Application Filling out your 4-H Award Application When asked about your Future Education & Career Plans: As of right now what are your short term and long term plans or goals for your future? Where do you want to go to college or do you want to go to college? What do you want to be when you are an adult? What about Recommendation Letters: Ask someone who knows you and is familiar with what you are involved in but not a relative When asking someone to write a letter for you, be clear and concise on what should be included in the letter & when the deadline is to submit the application and letters. (Don t wait till the last minute to ask!)

County 4-H Awards Tips for Preparing Your 4-H Award Application Filling out your 4-H Award Application A few Hints to organizing your Application: Organize your information Summarize the most important information Prioritize, you may have to leave out or omit something Use action verbs to explain what you did (try not to use the same verb over and over example: I helped with ) Spelling and Neatness is important! Ask a parent or teacher to proof read. Read and Follow Directions! Award applications are a great way to reflect on your accomplishments and achievements and record them for future use for scholarship and job applications.

The 2 Scholarship applications are due in June each year and presented during the Barnyard Olympics at the 4-H Fair..
