  1. Foundations Unit 1 Lesson 2 Personal Foundations Repentance Faith Baptism in water Baptism in the Spirit

  2. Evening 2; Session 3 Faith Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Faith is the basis of our relationship with God from the start. Faith does not get its certainty from our emotions or what seems right in our own eyes, but from accepting the Word of God and His judgement (which God laid on His Son, instead of on us, believers). When we believe in God and have accepted Jesus is our Savior, we are saved from the wrath/judgment.

  3. We are saved by grace through faith Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Romans 10:9-10 If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. We believe, trust, and confess that Jesus is the Son of God, the Lord of our lives, sent by the Almighty as the only way of salvation.

  4. We are justified by faith Romans 3:22-24 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God s wrath remains on them. In our case, we were guilty of our sins before the court of a holy God. However, Jesus bore the punishment due to us.

  5. We walk by faith First read Genesis 12:1-3 When Paul wanted to illustrate faith, he recounted Abraham s relationship with God. The manner in which Abraham manifested faith is the manner in which we must manifest faith. Romans 4:18-21 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, So shall your offspring be. Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old and that Sarah s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. He embraced the hope expressed in the divine promise. He didn t consider his own abilities as the determining factor. He did not waver his commitment to God s Word. He gave glory to God out of his faith, even before he saw the full accomplishment of the promise.

  6. Maybe you just start to understand the meaning of following Jesus but have not taken a conscious step to follow Him. Maybe you have been a follower of Jesus for a long time and want to strengthen your faith at this moment. I would like to invite you to close your eyes and pray in your heart with me. Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I have dishonored You. I have been so selfish and have caused both you and others pain and injury. Now, I confess my sins and I ask for your forgiveness and I repent. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. I turn from my sins and invite you to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord. From now on you get to decide what is good for me. And as my Savior, only you rescue me from the power and consequence of sin. In Jesus name. Amen.

  7. Evening 2; Session 4 Baptism in water What does it mean literally? John 3:23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. Mark 1:10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. Acts 8:38-39 And he (a powerful Ethiopian eunuch) gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way, rejoicing. The Greek word for baptize means to dip, to immerse, to submerge . New Testament believers were and are therefore immersed in water.

  8. What does it mean spiritually? Romans 6:3-7 Or don t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. When you go down in the water, you are saying: Lord Jesus, You died on the cross for me. From now on, my old life is dead. I ve broken with sin. When you are in the water, you are saying: Lord, just as You were buried in the tomb, so my old sinful life is now buried in the water. This baptism is my funeral. When you are lifted out of the water, you are saying: Lord, You were raised from the dead by God s power, and by that power I can now live a totally new life.

  9. Baptism is for believers Acts 16:27-31 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, Don t harm yourself! We are all here! The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved you and your household. Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. Sequence It was always after a person believed and repented that he or she was baptized. Noteworthy, there is no time limit for baptism. Anyone who is baptized is expected to know Jesus as their Savior, be willing to obey Him as Lord, and have some understanding of turning away from their sins.

  10. Promise of the baptism in the Holy Spirit? John 7:37-39 On the last and greatest day of the festival*, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. If anyone is thirsty: A deep longing for God to meet you in this way is essential for receiving the Holy Spirit. If you are not thirsty, ask God why. Come to me: Go to Jesus and ask. God gives to those who ask. Drink: Drinking is an act of faith. Lay hold of the blessing. Be ready to receive. Faith: When you come to Jesus, resist the temptation to passively wait for something to happen. Laying on of hands: A ministry to help you receive. It is biblical and a channel of faith for imparting the Holy Spirit. *Feast of the Tabernacles, harvest in October

  11. Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the early church Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? They answered, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. So, Paul asked, Then what baptism did you receive? John s baptism, they replied. Paul said, John s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all. When Paul met disciples at Ephesus, he felt something lacking and asked a very basic question: ? He knew that there was a receiving of the gift of the Holy Spirit which every believer was entitled to, but not every believer automatically had. He also expected them to know whether they had been filled with the Holy Sprit or not. Then, Paul led them in receiving the (baptism in) Holy Spirit.

  12. God What Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would do for us? John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father he will testify about me. John 16:8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. John 16:14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
