Petroleum, also known as crude oil, has played a significant role in human history as a major energy source. It is derived from plant remains and supplies a substantial portion of the world's energy needs. The process of obtaining petroleum involves techniques such as seismic surveys and drilling. Through fractional distillation, petroleum molecules are separated to create various substances, with gasoline being a common product. While petroleum offers advantages like abundance and reliability for transportation, it also poses challenges such as environmental damage and finite reserves. Interesting facts about petroleum include its measurement in barrels, major oil spills, and the staggering amount of oil consumed by humanity. Despite being a crucial resource, the use of petroleum raises concerns about global warming and sustainability due to its non-renewable nature.

  1. Energy Source-Petroleum By: Evan Schopf

  2. Background Petroleum is Greek for rock-oil Petroleum=crude oil Petroleum develops from remains of plants Petroleum supplies half of world s energy Viscosity of petroleum=use Hawaii energy=petroleum

  3. History Petroleum used by ancient civilizations Not main energy source until 1850 s Used in Egypt and china as medicine Crude oil expensive after 1850 s

  4. How it is Obtained? Seismic survey Can tell through rock Formations Drilling Pumping it out

  5. Uses Fractional Distillation(see Picture) Separation of molecules to create different Substances Evaporation point- what material is produced Used in gasoline

  6. Advantages There is a lot of it (second most abundant liquid) Priority for transportation A reliable source of energy Less damage to environment than coal

  7. Disadvantages Wont last forever 20 million to 2 billion for equipment Hard to find Leads to global warming Drilling damages the environment Non-renewable

  8. Interesting Facts Oil is measured in barrels The tanker Deepwater Horizon dumped 200 million gallons of oil into the ocean Petroleum killed over 100,000 mammals in the DP accident 2nd most abundant liquid on earth We have used 100 billion tons of oil
