Welcome to our second Stay and Play. Please have look at the different phonic resources that we use with the children and take your copies of the phonic booklet, phoneme mat and letter formation sheet. We will bring the children to the hall after registration to show you Song of Sounds in action!
Our focus today Phonics Song of Sounds Writing and handwriting Reading General information
Phonics Daily 15 mins phonic session and follow up activities. Phonics at Littlehaven is active or kinaesthetic. The programme has a proven impact of success. Our Year 1 Phonic screening results have improved to above the national average over the last three years.
What kind of resources are used? Key component is the song! Green decodable words Red tricky words Frieze, and phoneme stars Bingo game and grapheme/phoneme card Phoneme mats
So how can you help? Please practice the song at home. Play games with the songs, such as one doing the action and the other writes the song. Use the phoneme mats and play teachers. Identify and encourage your child to use the phonics when they are reading. Use sound buttons to decode words.
Writing Early Learning Goal Children use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. They also write some irregular common words. They write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible. Continue to practice nip, flip and grip, and name writing. Write for different purposes eg a card, a list, a label, or a caption.

Reading Early Learning Goal Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.
Image result for collins big cat Reading at Littlehaven Stage 1 Robot read Getting to know the book and the illustrations with you. You can then read the story to your child. Read slowly, talking about the characters and what is happening in the story, using the pictures as prompts. Stage 2 Re-read Now it is your child s turn to read the story to you. They may attempt to decode the words and use the pictures as clues, just as you did. Stage 3 Performance In this final stage, encourage your child to read the story with more fluency now that they are more familiar with it. Can they add expression animation to the story. Eg she was verysad. Please keep this book for the week and we will change them on a Monday. Have fun!
Big Cat book bands Wordless books that tell a story through pictures designed to develop understanding about how stories work. Lilac Very simple texts which provides total support through illustrations. Books use no more than one line per spread, and a simple phrase with a repeated pattern. Pink A Simple, predictable text with familiar objects and actions. 4-5 word sentences are included per spread, and the pattern is then repeated on each page with usually no more than one word changing from one page to the next. Pink B Predictable text with familiar objects and actions is combined with simple story development. Red A Simple but varied text with familiar objects and actions, combined with simple story development and a satisfying conclusion. Red B
So how can you help? Aim to read your child s big cat book with them at least 3 times a week. Encourage them to have a go at sounding out the words, and putting the sounds back together. Continue to share stories, every night if possible. Ask your child questions about the story, eg characters, settings, encouraging them to predict what may happen next. Visit a library and encourage them to look at a range of books (information, poetry)
