  1. PHRASAL VERBS Phrasal verbs are usually two word phrases consisting of: VERB + PREPOSITION VERB + ADVERB

  2. Bring up Mention. Introduce a topic into a conversation or discussion. Ex: They didn't bring the subject up at the meeting Raise a child Ex: My parents brought me up strictly

  3. Carry on Continue Ex: CARRY ON quietly with your work until the substitute teacher arrives. Behave badly Ex: The children annoyed me by CARRYING ON all morning.

  4. Cut down Consume less Ex: I'm trying to CUT DOWN the amount of coffee I drink during the day. Shoot Ex: A lot of soldiers were CUT DOWN by enemy fire as they stormed the airport. Reduce a vertical thing to ground level by cutting Ex: The logger CUT the tree DOWN. Cut something from a high position Ex: After Christmas he didn't carefully detach all the decorations, he just CUT them all DOWN.

  5. Drop out Quit an organized activity Ex: Yuri isn't on the team anymore. He dropped out.

  6. Fall out with Have an argument with Ex: I had a falling out with my sister last month and we haven't talked to each other since.

  7. Fill in Complete a form Ex: I FILLED IN the application form and posted it off. Substitute someone at work Ex: She's just had a baby, so we have hired someone to FILL IN for her.

  8. Get on with Have a good relationship Ex: Fortunately, I GET ON WITH my boss. Continue or start doing something Ex: She told us to GET ON WITH our work.

  9. Get over Recover (a cold, a disease, an ex boy/girl friend) Ex: Jennifer hasn't gotten over her breakup with Peter

  10. Give up Stop doing something that has been a habit Ex: I GAVE UP taking sugar in tea and coffee to lose weight. Stop being friendly, end relationships Ex: She GAVE UP all her school friends when she went to university. Stop doing something Ex: I have GIVEN UP trying to help them.

  11. Go through Experience something bad Ex: You wouldn't believe what I went through when I was ill! Read again Ex: I went through my notes before the exam. THIS PHRASAL VERB HAS SEVERAL MEANINGS!

  12. Grow up Mature, become adult Ex: He GREW UP in the West Country. Arise, emerge Ex: The industry GREW UP very quickly. Develop in a place or for a reason (city, town, etc) Ex: The town GREW UP as a trading post.

  13. Look after Take care Ex: Their auntie LOOKED AFTER them while their mother was in hospital.

  14. Make up Put on cosmetics Ex: It takes me 10 minutes to make my face up. Invent (a story) Ex: Don't believe anything she says. She always makes things up.

  15. Pick up To lift an object with the hands Ex: Pick up your pen and write please. Come and get someone in a car Ex: What time are you going to pick me up?

  16. Put off Postpone Ex: Don't put off your work, do it now!

  17. Put on Start wearing Ex: I PUT my coat ON before we went out. Get fat Ex: He's PUT ON a lot of weight since he gave up smoking. Deceive, lie Ex: I am not PUTTING you ON.

  18. Put out Broadcast Ex: Several charities put out an appeal on TV for money for the victims of the flooding in Mozambique. Extinguish a cigarette, a fire, etc ... Ex: He put out his cigarette before entering the building. Disturb or trouble someone Ex: Would it be putting you out greatly if I asked to change to another day?

  19. Show up Attend something or arrive somewhere Ex: Very few showed up at the meeting Become clear or apparent Ex: The downturn in sales showed up in the company accounts.

  20. Start off Make something start Ex: They STARTED OFF the meeting with an attack on our performance. Begin life, a career or existence Ex: She STARTED OFF as a receptionist with a lot of enthusiasm. Begin a journey Ex: We STARTED OFF early because we knew the journey would take all day.

  22. Take over Assume control of a company or organisation Ex: The bank was taken over by a Hong Kong bank that needed to get into the British Market. Start a job or position that someone had occupied before you Ex: You've been driving for hours, do you want me to take over for a while?

  23. Take after Look like, resemble Ex: He takes after his mother

  24. Turn down Reduce volume, temperature, etc... Ex: The room was hot so she turned the heating down Reject an offer, an invitation, etc ... Ex: They offered her the job but she turned it down. Fold the top covers of a bed down to make it ready for someone to go to sleep Ex: The hotel stuff turned down the bed and scattered flower petals on it while she was having dinner.

  25. Turn up Find unexpectly Ex: My keys turned up in the bedroom Increase volume or intensity of a radio, a TV, or other machines Ex: Turn up the TV, I can't hear what they're saying.
