GETTING READY GETTING READY FOR FOR GAVILAN GAVILAN REGISTRATION! REGISTRATION! Starting your career as a college student.
SELECTING COLLEGE CLASSES You will need to take a Gavilan class to fulfill your GECA requirements for: Fine Arts (1 class) Physical Science with a lab (1) Foreign Language(2) College English (1) College Mathematics (1-2) Social Science(1) Vocational Education(1-2) PE credit(3)
WHAT CLASSES SHOULD I TAKE NEXT SEMESTER? A Fine Arts class as listed on your course request in Art, Music, or Theater. A communications class, either CMUN 1A or CMUN 5 make a good start. If you are fluent in Spanish or Japanese you may take SPAN 1A or JPN 1A or B
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION V.S. GAVILAN GENERAL EDUCATION! For a Gavilan Associates degree you will need: For GECA graduation you will need: English College English 3 units Mathematics 30 credits College Math 3-4 units World History US History 10 credits Government Economics 5 credits College SS 3 units Biology 10 credits ES College PS 4 units Foreign Lang Fine Arts Vocational Ed 1.5 units 40 credits To complete a general education plan (IGETC or CSU Breadth) and a specific degree plan as presented in the Gavilan Catalog. See a Gavilan counselor to confirm a plan Most likely take classes in summer school to complete 60 + units. 10 credits 5 credits Please note: College classes are noted as units. GECA classes are noted as credits. 10 credits ALSO>>> You DO NOT need an associates degree to graduate GECA or to earn a bachelors degree. You DO NEED 40 college units to graduate from GECA. 10 units 3 units
COMPLETING THE A-G LIST FOR COLLEGE APPLICATION A. History/Social Science (2 years required) B. English (4 years required) C. Mathematics (3 years required) D. Lab Science (2 required, 3 recommended) E. Lang Other Than English (2 req, 3 rec) F. Visual & Performing Arts (1 year req) G. Electives (1 year required) A-G will complete as you complete GECA requirements.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION In the fall of 2014 students applying to universities, will need to have taken Geometry. So, if you did not take it in middle school, (if you did it should be placed on your GECA transcript), and skipped Geometry for Algebra II this year, you must go back and take Geometry or take it in summer school at Gavilan. Starting with the class of 2014 students must complete 80 hours of approved community service. See the GECA home page for details.
WHAT ELSE? You must have between a 2.0-2.5 GPA to take college classes. You must do well in your college classes to avoid Academic Probation at Gavilan. You are a COLLEGE student when in a Gavilan class and must behave maturely, representing GECA in the most positive manner.
WHAT WILL I NEED TO TURN IN? Your completed course request sheet signed by your parents Your completed High School Contract Your Gavilan placement scores.
