  1. 2018 Choose a poem which explores an aspect of human experience. By referring to poetic techniques, explain how this aspect of human experience is explored.   5. Planning Essay Now that you have selected your question, create a plan for an essay. Create the mind map on A4 paper. Write the key part of the question in the centre. Have 6 offshoots : 1. Example Main Paragraph Point Quote Explanation including technique Refer to Task Link Owen shows that war is not glorious as he portrays the soldiers as sickly, exhausted and disheveled individuals. They are described as bent double, like old beggars under sacks . This simile conveys the soldiers as old and filthy, which contrasts with the image of soldiers as brave and immaculate - an image used in the propaganda of the time. Furthermore, Owen describes them as coughing like hags . Another simile that demonstrates the soldiers were sickly and dispirited by the experience. These two similes highlights Owen s message that war is not glorious as the soldiers are portrayed as dejected and ill people who curse through the sludge , instead of valiantly marching to attack foes.
