Our aims for this Unit To understand the political structure of Scotland and the UK I can describe the factors contributing to a major social, political or economic change in the past and can assess the impact on people s lives. SOC 3-05a I can use my knowledge of current social, political or economic issues to interpret evidence and present an informed view. SOC 3-15a I can contribute to a discussion on the extent to which people s needs should be met by the state or the individual. SOC 4- 16a I can describe the main features of a democracy and discuss the rights and responsibilities of citizens in Scotland. SOC 2- 17a I can discuss the extent to which my choices and decisions are influenced by the ways in which I am informed. SOC 3-17b I understand the arrangements for political decision making at different levels and the factors which shape these arrangements. SOC 3-18a

Our Plan for Today Starter: Billy Kay Billy Kay is a Scottish author, writer and language activist. He is passionate about protecting Scots language and encouraging people to use it so that it does not die out and be lost to history. In April 2023, Billy Kay was invited to speak in Scottish Parliament during a section called Time for Reflection . He gave an impassioned speech in which he called for Politicians to recognise and give a voice to the 1.5 million Scots speakers in Scotland and allow them to be proud of who they are, and how they sound.

Task: Using your mic, the chat or the padlet, let me know your thoughts on Billy Kay s speech What messages or points did you pick up on from the speech? How does his passion for Scots language come through? How does it feel hearing Scots used in the formal setting of Parliament? Do you agree with Billy Kay s message? Why or why not?

Our Plan for Today What Would You Stand For? Both Billy Kay and the MSPs in the video were passionate about issues that affect society and were willing to stand up and use their voice to try to make positive changes in the world. Task: In the chat or on the padlet, add in some ideas about things you are passionate about wanting to see change within your lifetime.
Our Plan for Today Next Week For the next few lessons, I am going to set you the challenge of creating your own, brand new political party. You will need to decide on your name and logo What your party slogan will be Who will be the leader of your party What your three main policies will be We could even hold an election, either for our class, or for the other i-Sgoil teachers
