  3. LITERATURE REVIEW: POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS A). Immigrant Experiences: The majority of foreign born Hispanics (citizen or non-citizen) in US concerned with possibility of deportation during Trump admin. (Lopez 2018). B). Media Coverage of Immigration More immigration= more immigration coverage (Abrajano and Hajnal (2015). Negative media coverage leads audience to a negative reaction and image of immigrants (Branton and Dunaway) C). Public Opinion on Immigration Sudden changes in the demographics of local population can cause public opinion to become anti-immigrant (Hopkins 2010). Race of immigrant population important to public opinion- Asians seen as non-threatening while Latinos seen as threatening (Abrajano and Hajnal 2015)

  4. PREDICTIONS Immigrant Experiences: Pro-immigrant/Hispanic congress member + large immigrant/Hispanic population= high integration- potential decrease in anti-immigrant sentiment Media Coverage: Frequent Media coverage yet high Hispanic/low White population complicates idea on audience influence Greater cause for pro-immigrant congressman to support immigrant groups Could lead to increase in anti-immigrant sentiment in white/native populations Public Opinion: Increase in exclusionary attitudes among native/white populations As mentioned earlier, could be countered as result of pro-immigrant congressman

  5. RESEARCH PLAN Conducting and analyzing survey of members of populations of IL-4 in a limited sample size to observe sentiment on immigrants Potential questions: How do you feel about immigrant policies enacted by President Trump? Do you feel as if immigrant populations are a threat? If yes, how so? How do you feel about the policies Rep. Garcia plans to enact or support? Compare results by race/ethnicity/ party association to see if predictions are supported/contradicted
