PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE 5 8TH GRADE
HISTORY Portuguese comes from Latin such as French, Italian, Romanian and Spanish. When the German tribes come, right after the West Roman Empire disintegrates, they adapt to the Latin but put a little bit of their Celtic-Germanic roots. Moorish invasion in 8thcentury makes the Arabic language the administrative and common language in the conquered regions. But the Latin speakers just put some of the Arabic elements in their dialect and turning it into Mozarabic Andalusian Romance language. Portuguese has adopted a significant number of words from Greek - technical and scientific terminology. After that the Portuguese language continues to develop.
NUMBER OF SPEAKERS AND COUNTRIES The Community of Portuguese Language Countries or CPLP consists from nine independent countries that have Portuguese as an official language, they are: Angola - 34,109,758 Brazil - 214,408,955 Cape Verde - 563,375 East Timor - 1,349,055 Equatorial Guinea - 1,459,029 Guinea-Bissau - 2,024,780 Mozambique - 32,321,103 Portugal - 10,160,271 Sao Tome and Principe - 224,120 The total speakers are 297,271,163.
FUTURE According to UNESCO, Portuguese is the fastest growing language in Europe after English. Portuguese has the highest potential for growth as an international language in southern Africa and south America. It is a globalized language spoken officially on five continents, and as a second language in by millions worldwide.
