Post-Secondary Costs CHLOE DE BEAUPR
This is what I would like to work towards Cheaper costs of post-secondary education and eventually free post-secondary.
Details Would cover costs of education to an extent -Eg. Would not cover anything higher than a bachelor s Only cover main qualifications to needed for a well-paying job
Around The World Many Countries have free post-secondary education to an extent Extra money also covers many other benefits like: -Child benefits -Health care -Money for food for unemployed
Past Tuition fees have been raised by 40% in a decade Tripled in 20 years Enrollments started to go up in the early 2000 s In 2014/2015: 2,054,943 students were enrolled in a post-secondary program Enrollments have dropped slightly in BC, Alberta and New Brunswick
Present Undergraduate degree: $6,571 Graduate degree: $6,907 The amount of students enrolled in post-secondary rises 8.8% each year This year Ontario put in place OSAP (Ontario Student Assistant Program) -Free tuition for students in a household that earns $50,000 or less per year -Half of students in a household that earns $83,000 per year will also not have to pay for tuition
Low-income Students Trudeau says, We will increase the maximum Canada Student Grant for low-income students to $3,000 per year for full-time students, and to $1,800 per year for part- time students. Not helping all students
Student Debt The average student graduates with $27,000 in debt BC has a high average debt to tuition ratio -Cost of housing 14/30 graduates have to take up a side job
Background Information 2 million students are enrolled into post-secondary programs each year Programs are offered where organizations help high school students receive some university credits for a lower cost -Not many know Students that live with their parents are more likely to pursue higher education
Background Information Government funding as a share of operating revenues dropped from over 77% in 1992 to less than 55% in 2012 while tuition fees increased from 20% in 1992 to 37% in 2012. 4.3 billion was spent outside of Canada during Trudeau s first 100 days in office
Why has the cost increased? The governments support has declined notably The number of international students have increased
Solutions Increase the amount of classes, make education easier to access Raise taxes Create programs with universities
Taking Action: Raise Taxes Prioritize money, spend less on unnecessary or undesired areas http://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/99-stupid-things-the-government- did-with-your-money-part-i/ Trudeau plans to raise taxes for the higher class -Says he will use a small percent of the extra taxes for education Not much of this money will be helping the costs of post-secondary
Raising Taxes for Everyone Raising taxes for only the higher class is not enough money to provide lower costs of education Raise taxes for everybody We would pay 20% tax Raise taxes slowly year by year
Controversy Many would not want taxes raised Mainly raise taxes on companies, corporations, higher class, non-residents Extra money would also benefit retirement plans and evolving communities
Prices On Items Have taxes already included in the price
Conclusion Raising taxes would make it easier to help support all students
