  1. Introduction Physical properties Chemical properties Pharmaceutical application Chemical principle Procedure Calculation

  2. INTRODUCTION : Potassium permanganate has formula (KMnO4) with M.wt = 158.03gm/mol. sometimes called by its common name Condy's crystals. Potassium permanganate is prepare by heating potassium hydroxide with manganese dioxide in the presence of air or an oxidizing agent . 2KOH + MnO2+1/2O2 The K2MnO4converts into KMnO4by reacts with ( CO2 , Cl2and H2O ) 3K2MnO4+ 2CO2 2KMnO4+ MnO2+ 2K2CO3 The potassium manganese reacts with Cl2converted in to KMnO4 2K2MnO4+ Cl2 2KMnO4+ 2KCl The potassium manganese reacts with H2O converted in to KMnO4 2K2MnO4+ 2H2O 2KMnO4+ 2KOH + H2 K2MnO4+ H2O

  3. Physical properties 1- Odorless dark purple crystals . 2- The M.wt is158.03gm/mol . 3- Soluble in water (hot water) decompose by alcohol . 4- Stored in dark place it sensitive to light . 5- Luster by reflected light

  4. Chemical properties 1- It is secondary standard solution because it has low eq.wt M.wt of KMnO4= 158.3 ?? ??? Eq.wt of KMnO4= 158.3 5? 2- It is self-indicator. 3- It is unstable in light. 2 KMnO4 4- It is react with potassium iodide (KI) and liberate iodate (KIO3) in neutral and basic medium. 4KMnO4+ 2KI + 2H2O 4MnO2 + 2KIO3+ 4KOH And in acidic medium it is liberate (I2) like 2KMnO4+10KI + 8H2SO4 2MnSO4 + 6K2SO4+ 5I2+ 8H2 = 31.16 K2MnO4+ MnO2(s) + O2

  5. 5- Potassium permanganate is strong oxidizing agent it will oxidize any organic matter , It is used as a qualitative test for the presence of double or triple bonds in molecule . CH3(CH2)17CH=CH2+ 2 KMnO4+ 3 H2SO4 CH3(CH2)17COOH + CO2+4 H2O + K2SO4+ 2 MnSO4

  6. Pharmaceutical application 1- Oxidized proteins and bio organic substance. 2- Crystals of potassium permanganate are dissolved in warm water to get a purple solution which is very useful for treatment of various skin conditions like eczema, and dermatitis . 3- Anti-bacterial . 4- deodorant properties . 5- disinfectant properties so it used to cleaner a ulcer and abscess . .

  7. Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent , So the assay of it depended on Oxidation Reduction Reaction ( Redox Reaction),Chemical reactions involve the transfer of electrons between species , Oxidation is the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion. Reduction is the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion. Permanganate is not primary standard solution , There for many primary standard have been proposed for standardization of permanganate , the include H2C2O4 , Na2C2O4 , As2O3, K4[Fe (CN)6] . 5H2C2O4+2KMnO4+3H2SO4 2MnSO4+K2SO4 +8H2O +10CO2 Mn+7+ 5e- (C+32 O4)+2 Mn+2(Reduction process ) 2C+4O2+ 2e- (Oxidation reaction)

  8. 1- Fill the burette with KMnO4 solution . 2-Take (5ml) of (0.1N) Na2C2O4in conical flask and add to it (7.5ml) of diluted H2S04. 3-Heat the flask to (800C) . 4-Titrate with KMnO4solution until a first drop gives a pink color .

  9. 1- Calculate the normality of KMnO4solution . 2- Calculate the quantity of KMnO4in your sample .
