U15-U19 Parents and Players: Welcome to PSA College Night
By the end of this session players and parents will have an understanding of: 1. The PSA College Advisory program 2. The different playing divisions in college soccer 3. The criteria related to playing college soccer and info on the overall college search for a student-athlete 4. The student-athlete (soccer and non-soccer) role in the college search process 5. Parent role in the college process 6. Player timelines and various Division I and II recruiting rules 7. How players should communicate to college coaches before and after showcase tournaments 8. What a player profile should include 9. Provide answers (or if needed a follow up) to various questions that any players or parents have about this entire topic
PSA College Advisory Program Advisory Program Goal: Provide support to PSA players that are interested in exploring the option of playing college soccer at the various collegiate levels available. ? Host seminars on various topics (Fall +Winter + Spring) ? U15-U19 teams competing in College Showcase Tournaments and Events during the year. ? SportsRecruits software purchasing option ? Up to Date college resources posted on the Potomac College Advisory webpage ? Potomac Memorial Tournament College Coaches Panel Discussion ? Inviting local college coaches out to practices for select teams ? Promoting college placements ? Team Brochure development ? Highlight and promote attending local college soccer games (Fall and Spring). ? Coaches holding player progress meetings throughout the process. ? Knowledgeable coaches that have placed players to play at various college soccer levels

Potomac Soccer College Pathway: College Placement for Recent Boys and Girls Players
Level of College Athletic Competition ? NCAA Division I ? Over 350 institutions ? Partial and full athletic scholarships offered up to 4 years. (This can cover tuition and fees, room and board, course related books, and up to $250 in required supplies each year). ? NCAA D-I men s soccer teams may offer up to 9.9 scholarships each. ? NCAA D-I women s soccer teams may offer up to 14 scholarships each ? Highest Level of Competition
Level of College Athletic Competition ? NCAA Division II ? More than 300 institutions ? Uses a partial scholarship model funded through a mix of athletics, scholarships, academic aid, need based grants and or employment earnings. ? NCAA DII men s soccer teams may offer 9.0 scholarships each. ? NCAA D-II women s soccer teams may offer up to 9.9 scholarships each ? More rigorous spring season than NCAA DIII
Level of College Athletic Competition ? NCAA Division III ? 180,000 student athletes at more than 450 institutions ? Do not offer athletic scholarships ? Allows for opportunities to play more than one sport ? A competitive recruiting process ? Limited official spring playing seasons
Level of College Athletic Competition ? NCAA NAIA ? 65,000 student athletes at over 250 institutions ? Athletic scholarships are available ? More flexible recruiting and transfer regulations ? Very few in this region ? NJCAA (Community/Junior Colleges) ? Second-largest intercollegiate sports organization (second to NCAA) ? Athletic Scholarships available ? Athletic options usually limited ? Competition levels vary ? Extremely cost-effective in an age of rising tuition
Interested in Playing College Soccer? ? There is a place for everyone to play college soccer. However it is possible that not every college you are interested in will be able to provide you that opportunity. In the same vein, not every college interested in you will be a good fit. ? If interested in playing college soccer you must explore and research schools within all the Division levels that could be a good fit for your individual academic and playing level. ? The PSA Technical Staff and your coaches can assist in this process and provide playing level recommendations.

Selecting A College: Factors to Consider During College Search for a Student Athlete ? Would I be happy at this college, if I did not play soccer? ? Location (Urban vs Rural) and Size ? Academic Programs: Majors and Programs Offered ? Financial Cost ? Distance from Home ? Team/Coaching Staff ? Opportunity to Earn Playing time ? Overall feel of a campus and college environment
As a Student Athlete: What is My Role in this Process? ? Soccer ? In many ways, you drive your own process. ? Work hard in school, earn the best grades you can. ? Work hard at every practice and in matches. ? Be a leader and a good teammate on the field. College Programs recruit high character players, who are also talented. ? Work hard off the ball, especially after you make a mistake. ? Continue to work to improve your game technically, tactically, physically and emotionally.
As a Student Athlete: What is My Role in this Process? ? Non-Soccer ? Be Proactive and Responsible. ? Do well in school in all your classes, study, study, study ? If you can, take a rigorous high school course load including AP/ college level classes. The more the better! ? Create positive relationships with Teachers and School Administrative Leaders. ? Perform community service. ? Be involved in other extracurricular activities at school or in the community. ? Have and maintain a POSITIVE social media profile.
The Importance of Academics: All 4 High School Years ? Tips ? Study and do well in all of your classes ? Adjust to high school and the environment your Freshmen year ? Students should always take a rigorous course load ( AP course load or Honors) ? Be more than a soccer player/athlete ? Perform community service ? Hold leadership positions (Student Government) ? Attend conferences ? Academic standing is a major factor in how and who college coaches recruit no matter what Division.
The Role of the Parent ? Help your child get organized. ? Be honest in what works/could work for your family financially ? Help your child write emails but do not send them on your child s behalf. ? Help your child respond to emails but do not send them on your child s behalf ? Explore colleges with your son or daughter. Informal trips are great ? Be supportive during the whole process. Also remain optimistic and realistic. ? Help schedule formal interviews with admissions department and remind your child to follow up with all sorts of administrative things! ? College coaches don t want to hear from you, they want to hear from your son/daughter. ? Take the lead on the financial part of the college process. Understand Financial Aid and keep yourself connected with your son/daughter s high school career center for informational sessions related to this topic and other topics.

Continue sending college coaches tournament schedule and your player profile information ? Spring of Junior Year + Senior Year ? Narrow list further ? More College visits ? Division 1 and II players register for the NCAA Clearinghouse ? Improve soccer skills, strength and fitness
NCAA Division I + II Rules and Regulations ? Before June 15 of Junior Year ? Coaches cannot email, call, text, receive phone calls or meet with players on or off campus (except at ID camps) ? Players can email coaches however a college coach can only acknowledge their email and provide a player questionnaire and camp information. ? After June 15 of Junior year ? Coaches can receive phone calls from recruits ? Coaches can call, text or email recruits ? Coaches can verbally offer athletic aid packages ? After August 1st of Junior year ? NCAA Dead + Quiet Periods (Div. I + II) Women s Soccer Men s Soccer November 7-10, 2022 (Monday through Thursday of the initial week for the signing of the National Letter of Intent). December 15, 2022 - January 5, 2023 November 7-10, 2022 (Monday through Thursday of the initial week for the signing of the National Letter of Intent). December 9-11, 2022 (Friday through Sunday of the NCAA Division I Men s Soccer Championship). A coaching staff member may attend an event conducted in conjunction with and in the host city of the championship. Quiet Period: December 23-25, 2022. ? ? ? ? ?
Communication before and after tournaments/showcases ? Around 4 weeks out (not before), Email player profile and specific tournament info. ? 2 weeks out: Email tournament schedule, game times, location, jersey colors and jersey number. Any schedule changes leading up to the event make sure to email the coaches. ? Post Showcase/Tournament: Email coaches to thank them
Intro emails to College Coaches: What to consider including ? Professional no spelling errors. A clear and concise message that expresses your interest in their school and shows that you have done research about their school and college soccer program. ? Some of the colleges I am looking at hold their own College ID Camp, would it help my chances at being looked at by that college if I attended one of their college specific ID camps? ? Which college showcases will my team be playing in? ? Is it important to create a highlight video of myself? How do I get game film of me playing? Does Potomac provide video services for every team? ? I want to go to a little Ivy league school like Bates, Bowdin, Amherst or Tufts. Are those very competitive schools to play at? ?
