LETS CREATE POTTERY Shelby Backus Elementary Art Teacher Grades 2 and 3
BACKGROUND My classroom has a class set of iPads. My technology department has gotten the full version of the Lets Create Pottery app on every iPad. This app gives students images of pottery and they can create something to look exactly like the image or they can create anything they want. It works like a pottery wheel. There are glazes and patterns they can add to their creations as well. Each creation goes for auction when completed. You can watch the price increase as the auction continues.
DAY 1 Students once they get to my classroom have had experience with the app. Before we start our pottery project in class, I will spend one day with them creating on the pottery app. Then will then spend a day once we are done with the pottery project on the app as well. The first day they will spend the first 10 minutes playing around in the app. After I will create a challenge. I will write the highest score on the board. The student must show me the score. The person with the highest score at the end of class will get a treat. There are things the students should learn through this. They will participate in a turn and talk to discuss some things they noticed or learned through this app. This includes; you need multiple layers of glaze, pieces that have certain colors sell for more, pieces that have extra handles, or tops sell for more, they could make multiple pieces in one class, and it went in the kiln twice.
DAY 2 & 3 Students will participate in a pottery project using clay. Through this hand building process we will draw connections to the pottery game; the 3dimensional aspect of the piece in life in comparison to digital. On the third day we will glaze their pieces. Through this process we will draw connection to the app again. In the app you need to add multiple layers of glaze to get a brighter, richer color, same will go for glazing in their artwork.
DAY 4 Once the students complete their pottery project, we will bring it all full circle by playing with the pottery app one more time. Keeping tally of who has the highest score. They will also take a tally on their own of how many pieces they make within the allotted time. At the end of class we will gather together to have a small discussion about the differences and similarities between creating pottery digitally and in real life. As we go through, I will be filling in a Venn diagram on the board. Some of my questions will include: How many could we make in real life versus the iPad? Which one was harder to create in terms of 3-dimensional space? What did the game teach you that was helpful in creating the artwork? What were some things that were totally different between the app and creating it in clay? Do you actually get to keep the digital work? Are you able to hold it in your hand? What about the pottery you made? Can you hold that in your hand?
OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES Objectives Students will be able to make connections between creating art digitally and creating art physically. Students will be able to use the app as a learning tool before going into a physical clay project. Outcomes My hope is that students will get an understanding of the functionality of both digital means of creating as well as physical. I want them to be aware of the time it takes to create physically. I want them to see how we can use the digital world as means of learning. I want them to be able to draw the connections between the two.
