Here are some things you can do ahead of time to prepare for the transition: Teach your child that they will grow and that s ok! Teach them that this is a normal aspect of having a female body! Like mummy! The more we prepare our children and ourselves for these changes and help them understand that they will be okay, the easier the transition into young adulthood! So what s a good way to teach your child about menstruation? Social stories.

Make sure they: Shower daily by themselves. Can change their clothes and undergarments every day. Know how to dry their genital area after urinating. Wash and dry their hands independently each time after visiting the restroom. Keep themselves generally clean all day.

They directly impact our body s ability to absorb vital minerals & nutrients. This can lead to deficiencies & infections. All school-going children & adults in the household who feed them must undergo de- worming every 6 months. This is a highly recomended preventive practice. The procedure is safe and simple ingesting a deworming pill prescribed by the doctor.

There may be mild itching on the first 2 days of menarche i.e. first ever period. But yeast infection shows as: a cloudy white discharge from the vaginal area, genital itching, & intense burning during urination. This occurs due to low immunity. Infection may travel to the bladder or uterus. If itching lasts longer than 2 days, seek medical attention! Find out if it is caused by infection or the coming of menarche.

Make sure your child consumes less fluids before going to bed. Feed your child honey as a natural remedy. Teach your child to use the toilet in the middle of the night, by setting up an alarm if needed. Train your child in bladder muscle- strengthening exercises or any other physical exercise that may help with bladder control.

Key 1 Don't manipulate your genitals too much. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after. Key 2 Don't put any foreign objects in your private parts.

Do not over-use anti-microbial liquids such as Dettol or Savlon; they may cause adverse skin reactions in sensitive areas such as the genitals. A good practice might be to wash all girl-children's undergarments separately.
