  1. PSALM 90 The Prayer of Moses in the Wilderness

  2. Psalm 90 1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations. 2Before the mountains were born or before You had given birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God. 3You turn man back to dust, And say, Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men! 4For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

  3. Psalm 90 5You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone]; In the morning they are like grass which grows anew 6In the morning it flourishes and springs up; In the evening it wilts and withers away. 7For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been terrified. 8You have placed our wickedness before you, Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence.

  4. Psalm 90 9For all our days pass away in Your wrath; We have finished our years like a whispered sigh. 10The days of our life are seventy years or even, if because of strength, eighty years; Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow, For it is soon gone and we fly away. 11Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?] And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You? 12So teach us to number our days, That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom

  5. Psalm 90 13Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be? Be compassionate toward Your servants revoke Your sentence. 14O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older], That we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have suffered evil. 16Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants And Your [glorious] majesty to their children. 17And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us; Confirm for us the work of our hands, Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

  6. What Happened In the Wilderness?

  7. The Wilderness Deutoronomy 8:2-5 2And you shall remember [always] all the ways which the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart (mind), whether you would keep His commandments or not.3He humbled you and allowed you to be hungry and fed you with manna, [a substance] which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, so that He might make you understand [by personal experience] that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.4Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your feet swell these forty years.5Therefore, know in your heart (be fully cognizant) that the Lord your God disciplines and instructs you just as a man disciplines and instructs his son.

  8. Praying In the Wilderness God leading Testing Humbling Revealing the Heart/Mind Miraculous Provision Disobedience and Provocation Intercession Instruction and judgment Sin and Death

  9. Psalm 90:1 Amp God s Eternity and Man s Transitoriness (the state or quality of lasting only for a short time). 1. Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations. Personally - Moses prays what he knows and realized about God. He has been their refuge. He was a hiding place for Moses in Exodus 1-2 when Pharaoh ordered the Hebrew sons to be cast into the river and Moses' mother put him in an ark and sent it down the river. God was his stability in Pharaoh s house. He kept his identity as a Hebrew in the midst of Egyptian palace. God was his refuge on the backside of the wilderness and God appeared to him in the burning bush. God was the safe place when the plagues were upon Egypt. God is his sanctuary as the tabernacle in the wilderness Moses has experienced the hiding place, stability, rest and sanctuary in God

  10. Praying In the Wilderness Moses lived 120 years yet he says Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations. Because He was close to God he had the revelation of God s faithfulness as a refuge in all generations. This includes those who were before him and those who would be after him. When we are close, we find out thru faith and revelation what could not be determined thru facts. Moses Prayer becomes Worship in the book of Psalms. It s a prayer put to music or as a poem to be read, repeated and experienced. He intercedes and asks for mercy. This worship is from one whom God has revealed himself, from someone who knows God, from someone who is close to God, from the heart of an intercessor. It s an intimate Psalm. We see this because Moses identified God in his prayer as His refuge. When you stop and focus on the truth that God is God it leads you into true Worship. Pattern of Moses Acknowledge God (Identity) before making his petition and Intercession

  11. Psalm 90:2 Amp 2. Before the mountains were born or before You had given birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, You are [the eternal] God. Before the earth or the things that seem to be permanent and unmovable on the earth were You are God. God was first Before God birthed the earth and the world - You are God Eternally You are God Everlasting - indefinite or unending future that is Continuously forever and always. There is not time gap where God is absent or God is God. He is always present and always God. To know that no matter what it looks like God is present and He is God. Be certain of God s identity in the wilderness and not misidentify God because of the situations. One of the Israelite adversaries said that God is god of the mountains but not the valley. Vs. 1-2 Talk about who God is

  12. Psalm 90:3-6 Amp 3. You turn man back to dust, And say, Return [to the earth], O children of [mortal] men! - So don t return us to mud, saying, Back to where you came from! msg The power of God s judgment and the impact on man. Continuing in Sin will cause you to return to the dust Intercede - Have mercy and be patient 4. For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. Time is fleeting for man but you God are not bound by time. 5. You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep [forgotten as soon as they are gone]; In the morning they are like grass which grows anew. 6. In the morning it flourishes and springs up; In the evening it wilts and withers away. The temporary life of man contrasted with the permanence of God. These verse Speak of Man s frailty and transitoriness.

  13. Psalm 90:7-9 Amp 7. For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been terrified. Don t consume us in a moment 8. You have placed our wickedness before you, Our secret sins [which we tried to conceal, You have placed] in the [revealing] light of Your presence Acknowledge the secret sins Vs 3-8 God has the right to judge sin 9. For all our days pass away in Your wrath; We have finished our years like a whispered sigh. Shortness of life

  14. Psalm 90:10 Amp 10. The days of our life are seventy years or even, if because of strength, eighty years; Yet their pride [in additional years] is only labor and sorrow, For it is soon gone and we fly away. The length of life include toil, trouble and sorrow and it its 11. Who understands the power of Your anger? [Who connects this brevity of life among us with Your judgment of sin?] And Your wrath, [who connects it] with the [reverent] fear that is due You? Life is so brief because of Sin and God s judgment of sin God has a right to be angry with sin

  15. Psalm 90:12 Amp 12. So teach us to number our days, That we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom. Begins the prayer of intercession and mercy to God. Instruct us, show us, teach us, cause us to value our days and know they will come to an end so we soberly take advantage of our time that goes so quickly.

  16. Psalm 90:13-14 Amp 13. Turn, O Lord [from Your fierce anger]; how long will it be? Be compassionate toward Your servants revoke Your sentence. Moses response to God s right judgment was prayer. He petitions God to return. He intercedes for the people. He says God cause us to remember your compassion and closeness. Turn back to us and let your wrath pass. Lord be compassionate. The return of your presence will cause us to come back to you 14. O satisfy us with Your lovingkindness in the morning [now, before we grow older], That we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Cause us to know your lovingkindness now because time is not on our side. We will rejoice and be glad the rest of our days. The Love and lovingkindness of God brings satisfaction, joy and gladness.

  17. Psalm 90:15 Amp 15. Make us glad in proportion to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have suffered evil. Moses petition is for God to show his love and lovingkindness above his right judgment. Cause us to experience your goodness and overwhelm the judgment that we suffered. God s judgment feels like an evil affliction

  18. Psalm 90:16-17 Amp 16. Let Your work [the signs of Your power] be revealed to Your servants And Your [glorious] majesty to their children. 17. And let the [gracious] favor of the Lord our God be on us; Confirm for us the work of our hands, Yes, confirm the work of our hands. Evidence of your power, presence and favour is with us again. Let it be so strongly, that our children can see the proof of God being with us, for us and favoring us. Let the beauty of God be upon us. Exchange our sin for your beauty. Even cause us to see God in the work of our hands. Let it be confirmation to all that see. The permanent evident presence of God is all that we do. Work thru our hands. Let our work not be in vain Return to God as our refuge is their only hope.
