DISTRICT 3 MINOR HOCKEY PRE-SEASON CHAT REQUIREMENTS Introductory Check-ins Players/coaches rights and responsibilities as per Hockey Canada s Ontario Branches Anti-discrimination Policies Discuss Bullying and Harassment Define and Discuss Accommodations and related rights/responsibilities Discuss the importance of Respect and Confidentiality
INTRODUCTORY CHECK INS Pre season chats are a great opportunity for coaches, other volunteers parents and players to introduce themselves and state how they would like to be addressed. Referring to someone as they have requested is a way of showing them you respect who the are. (ie Jonathan wanted to be call Johnny, Patrick wants Pat) Sharing your gender pronoun is just like sharing your name, because it s not something you can always tell just by looking at someone. It is okay to make mistakes but it is important to show that we are trying to remember.
PLAYERS/COACHES RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES It is everyone s right to enjoy a safe, respectful environment when playing hockey, free of discrimination and harassment. Players coaches and parents share equal responsibility for ensuring a high level of respect in the hockey environment. Players are encouraged to speak up if the are being bullied or harassed or witness it occurring with other players etc. HEO, the District and all associations are engage fully to offer a program that include all participants . Forms of complaint are available in the District Three manual under the Bylaws, Operational Procedures and Rules section of the D3 website.
HARASSMENT/BULLYING HARASSMENT: is a form of discrimination including conduct, gestures or comments which are insulting, intimidating, humiliating, hurtful, malicious, degrading or otherwise offensive to and individual or group of individuals. It includes any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you. Some of the prohibited grounds for harassment are religion, gender identity/expression, family status, race, disability or sexual orientation. Generally persists over time Also can be considered bullying
HARASSMENT/ BULLYING Players are encouraged to speak up if the are being bullied or harassed or witness it occurring with other players etc. Tell a friend, your parents, your teacher, your coach or the police Forms are available in the District Three manual under the Bylaws, Operational Procedures and Rules section of the D3 website.
ACCOMMODATIONS If players are experiencing any barriers to participating fully and equally in hockey because of any of the prohibited grounds, they have a right to be provided a special arrangement that will help them participate fully. These arrangements are called accommodations some examples are; Arranging a sign language interpreter for someone who is deaf Providing changeroom arrangements before or after playing related to protected grounds such as gender identity/expression a disability or religious beliefs. Having someone speak to your abuser or to the person who is bullying you
RESPECT & CONFIDENTIALITY Coaches parents and players must respect the confidentiality of someone who has confided in them with personal information relating to the prohibited grounds. It is important to respect their wishes to not share that information with others without their permission. Examples A player speaks to a coach about his parents who have separated but doesnt want anyone to find out. A player tells a team mate about their gender expression/identity but isn t ready for their friends to know. Parents speaking to coaches about their childrens gender expression/identity. A player/coach bullying/abusing you in the changing room or on bench
