Public Policy Institute 2019 Day 1 AM: Foundations of policy & grassroots advocacy PM: Foundational tools for understanding public policy *One hour to meet with Region & State teams Day 2 AM: Federal Agency Programs PM: National School Safety presentation & Grassroots Advocacy *One hour to meet with Region & State teams Day 3 10am-3pm: Schedule meetings with your elected officials
How to Prepare for the Hill Day Review all information sent to you by Caden Fabbi Hill Day packet NASP resources & materials Work with other PPI attendees from your state to plan and schedule meetings with your elected officials for Wed, 7/17: 10am-3pm Research your elected officials & their priorities Review proposed legislation Begin to brainstorm possible issues to discuss in your Hill meetings **Your GPR representatives are here to help!**
Integrate learning supports, instruction, and school leadership Implement MTSS Improve access to mental health support Integrate school climate and school safety efforts Balance physical and psychological safety Employ effective discipline practices Consider the unique context of each school environment 7
What Should I Talk About In Meetings?
During Your Meeting 1. Introductions Bring your business card (if you have one) Thank legislative assistant, Congress person, Senator for taking time to meet Identify yourself as constituent & provide brief statement about yourself & your experience as SP and/or in education
During Your Meeting 2. Talking points Basic info about role of school psychologist Share your story! Highlight specific policy that is working well (or not well) in your state or district Consider 1 or 2 specific asks during your meeting
During Your Meeting 3. Ending the Meeting Ask for any questions Ask if they or their boss can support these issues Offer to provide future input Thanks for time & attention to your issues!
