Prevalence and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in Iran
High prevalence and incidence of Type 2 Diabetes in the urban population of Iran, particularly in Tehran, are highlighted in various studies. The incidence rate in adults aged 20 years and above shows a concerning trend, with over 1% of the population developing Type 2 Diabetes annually. The alarming rate is estimated to affect more than 310,000 individuals each year. Research also links glucose intolerance to cardiovascular disease risk in Iranian men and women. Additionally, the impact of diabetes on cardiovascular risk and all-cause mortality is explored through the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, underlining the significant burden of diabetes on public health outcomes.

If we extrapolate the standardized annual rate of the incident diabetes to the current urban population of IRAN older than 20 years, it is estimated that each year more than 310, 000 individuals develop Type 2 diabetes. This alarming rate confirms previous estimates that the Middle East region will have the highest increase in number of diabetes cases in the following 20 years 6
