Definition of Management According to Koontz and O Donnell- Management is the creation and maintenance of an internal environment in an enterprise where individuals, working in groups can perform efficiently and effectively towards the attainment of group goals. Thus, (a)Creation of an environment that enables good performance is the responsibilty of managers. (b)Management operates through individuals and groups of persons. (c)Management aims at attaining efficiency and effectiveness in the fulfillment of organizational goals. ,

  5. Key Features of Management Management is Pervasive- Management is needed to direct group efforts in all kinds of organizations whether big or small; political, social or business. Management is Continuous Process- Management is an ongoing process that involves performing functions like planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Management is Goal-oriented- All the activities of management are directed towards the attainment of pre-determined goals of the organization. The success or failure of management depends upon the extent to which these goals are achieved. Management is social process- Management is done by people, through people and for people. It is a social process because it is concerned with interpersonal relations with people.

Management is Situational- Effective management depends upon taking managerial decisions in the light of prevailing conditions i.e., according to the specific internal and external environment of the particular organization. The management principles which may be applicable in one situation, may not apply in other situations. The situational differences must be taken into account. Management is Intangible- Management is an invisible force. But its presence can be felt in the orderliness and coordination of activities in the organization. - - ,
