Prioritizing a la Power Standards ENDURANCE - Is the knowledge and skill essential in order to be literate in this area beyond a single test (i.e. is there life-long value to this)? LEVERAGE - Will the knowledge and skill prove to be valuable in learning essential content in other academic areas? READINESS -Is the knowledge and skills needed in order for the student to be successful and achieve not only in this grade level, but in subsequent grades?
Which Standards to Prioritize? State Academic Standards for your discipline The CCLS for Literacy in History, Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects K-5 are the ELA Standards (it s in the title) 6-12 are a section of the ELA Standards
FYI What is a guaranteed and viable curriculum? A guaranteed and viable curriculum (GVC) is one that guarantees equal opportunity for learning for all students. Similarly, it guarantees adequate time for teachers to teach content and for students to learn it. A guaranteed and viable curriculum is one that guarantees that the curriculum being taught is the curriculum being assessed. It is viable when adequate time is ensured to teach all determined essential content. What is meant by essential content? Essential content is the knowledge and skills that students need to know, understand, and be able to do in order to succeed in school. Essential content is determined by unpacking provincial standards and creating measurable learning targets.
FYI Why develop a guaranteed and viable, standards based curriculum? Marzano s research establishes this the one feature of schools that has the most impact on improving student achievement. Doug Reeve s, Mike Schmoker, and others consider this the first step toward increasing learning for all students. Clear learning targets make instructional decision making easier for teachers and learning clearer for all students.
