Outcomes & Goals 1. Become familiar with the application for private alternative education programs and schools. 2. Be aware of registration/renewal timeline and process for approval or denial of submitted application. 3. Be familiar with the statutes and rules related to private alternative education programs and schools.
Alternative Education Programs/Schools ORS 336.615 A school or separate class group designed to best serve students education needs and interests and assist students in achieving the academic standards of the school district and the state. ORS 336.625 Learning situations that are flexible with regard to environment, time, structure, and pedagogy.
Why Alternative Education? Ensure students educational needs are met in a non-traditional setting Reengage, support, and advocate for disconnected students Provide opportunities for credit recovery and a second chance for youth to be successful in achieving educational goals Navigation of post-secondary and career transitions Wrap-around services
Who is served by Alternative Education? Students who Need additional academic supports because they either exceed or do not meet state academic standards Are disengaged from school Identify as LGBTQIA Experience barriers to success Are pregnant or parenting Are in the Foster system, homeless, or highly mobile Want to move quickly into post- secondary education or training Require individual attention
Registration of Private Alternative Education Programs/Schools ORS 336.625 & ORS 336.631 Annual registration and approval of private alternative education program/school. OAR 581-021-0072 Registration of Private Alternative Education
Changes to the 2020-21 Application Additional section in application Modality of instruction & percentage of students time Additional required submission Staff Roster to include all staff in contact with students. Procedures of staff hiring. Master class schedule.
Required Submission Components 1. A complete 2020-2021 Private Alternative School (PAS) Registration Application 2. Required Documentation 3. Copies of written annual evaluation(s) from each contracting public school district of previously approved private alternative education programs/schools.
