Explore the trade-offs in performance between running virtual machines and dedicated machines, and learn why businesses need to choose the right hosting solution for growth. This project involves testing game, web, and file servers on Openstack as a private cloud versus dedicated machines, with a focus on performance metrics like stability under high loads. Follow the progress as we navigate installation issues and move towards network setup, service configuration, and performance testing.

  1. Private Cloud or Dedicated Hosts Mason Mabardy & Matt Maples

  2. Overview The Problem Why this is important Solution Performance Metrics Progress

  3. The problem Virtual machines are cheaper to run than dedicated machines, but what is the trade off in performance?

  4. Why this is important Businesses small or large are always trying to expand. Physical machines or going the VM route, which is right for the business

  5. Solution The idea is to test 3 types of servers, a game server, a web server, and a file server. Using Openstack as a hypervisor and administrator for a private cloud VS using dedicated machines to host these services.

  6. Performance Metrics Game server: stability under high load (multiple clients, extreme usage, etc.) File server: stability under high usage (transfer time for large files and multiple users) Web server: stability under load (massive amount of simultaneous connections)

  7. Progress We have run into issues installing a stripped down version of Ubuntu Server 14.04LTS. The full version of Ubuntu is being installed. Next will be to network the machines, install and configure services, and test performance. Next, we will install the cloud software bundles and network the machines and retest with the same services.
