Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Positionality We are not the experts We are all new to this field We all come with non-medicalized understandings of disability and diverse educational and lived experiences We strive for an anti-deficit and social justice approach Our aim is not to showcase our expertise but to collaboratively discuss how we can collectively address obstacles in the field

  8. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Assumptions Assuming the best intentions of instructors and colleagues from other departments We do not individually hold all the answers There are inherent power dynamics in our relationships with students, faculty, and our institutions

  9. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Obstacles to Access

  10. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Power and Privilege Ableism is inherent and ingrained within the fabric of higher education. Ableist understandings and bias show up in our everyday work. Disability is often not considered a valued form of human diversity within our institutions and offices. Disability services providers can act as gatekeepers to access.

  11. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Our Actions Presentations: Intentionally including tenets of disability studies Programs: Paid student panels, film discussions, disabled student art display, affinity groups Professional Development: oInternal: Embedding DEI content and discussions into staff meetings oExternal: Created an open-enroll, self-guided accommodation course that begins with disability studies topics and established an employee learning community Resources: Created accommodation implementation/common scenario email templates for students

  12. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Group Discussion and Share - 1 Prompt: How have you been able to push back against ableism at your institution? Prompt: How do you address the power dynamic that is present when we have power over making determinations that impact students? Prompt: What are you doing to promote disability identity and culture?

  13. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Supporting Instructors The faculty model has its own flaws and often instructors are under resourced. Because disability has historically been barred from institutions of higher education, knowledge about disability is varied. Varying classroom dynamics and pedagogical trends can create challenges to accommodation implementation.

  14. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Our Actions: - 1 Consultation: 1:1 meetings with instructors Collaboration: Connect instructors with various campus offices (e.g., edu. tech, teaching innovation) and other identified instructors Professional Development: Created an open-enroll, self- guided course with module dedicated to accommodation implementation Presentations: Regular presentations across campus

  15. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Group Discussion and Share - 2 Prompt: What are your biggest reported pain points from instructors? (Class sizes too large, no resources for testing, etc.) Prompt: How do you support instructors with accommodation management? Prompt: What do you include in presentations to instructors?

  16. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Administrative Universities operate within hierarchal structures that regularly silo departments. This can lead to replicating resources and prevent cross-campus collaboration. Disability services are frequently undervalued and how they are positioned within the institution can influence their effectiveness and impact on campus. Disability services offices often lack resources such as staffing and funding.

  17. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Our Actions: - 2 Collaboration: Created liaison positions from DS office to colleges Partnering with other offices for shared resources and events oInterdepartmental series on accommodations and access oMedical Education speaker series

  18. Baltimore, Maryland July 15-19, 2024 Group Discussion and Share Prompt: How do you collaborate with campus partners? Prompt: How are you communicating your value to campus stakeholders?
