Objectives Review and reflect on Mentor-Administrator conversations and maintaining confidentiality. Understand coaching strategies and learn to ensure you are mentoring for students success. Distinguish between coaching heavy vs. coaching light. Share problems of current practice and collaborate with a coaching partner to develop solutions and strategies to solve. Reflect on learning and plan your next steps in your work. 3

Norms for Collaboration for Professional Learning Honor meeting commitments: Arrive on time and participate fully until the meeting is over. Respectful Use of Electronics: Use computer/tablet for note taking, if you d like, but please disconnect from email so you can better connect with colleagues and content during our meeting. Equity of Voice: Hear all voices. Provide opportunities for others to speak Active Listening: Truly listen to what people are saying, rather than thinking about how you will respond. Fully engage in conversations, practice active listening, and respond verbally and/or writing when asked. Respect for all perspectives: We all have different experiences and come with different perspectives Safety and Confidentiality: Our purpose is to learn how to support each other and maintain professionalism. This sets a context of safety share ideas and grow. Confidentiality honors those who are not in the room. 5
Connector- Reflect on Prior Learning Discuss/Respond to the Mentoring and Confidentiality article you were asked to read prior to our session. Tie this into reflection on any mentor-admin conversations you may have or are planning to have with your Beginning Teacher s administrator. Share successes and challenges with one another and brainstorm next steps. 6
New Learning:Coaching Heavy vs. Coaching Light You were tasked with reading two (2) articles by Joellen Killion, and then to answer four (4) reflection questions. 1. Make a list of the activities that the author uses as examples of coaching light that are a part of your work as a specialist. 1. Then make a list of heavy coaching activities. With a partner, share your responses and reflect on your own practice. 1. What other activities do you engage in as a part of your coaching work? When we all return to the whole group, we will share out partner main points with the whole group. 1. Would you consider them to be examples of coaching heavy or coaching light? 7
Problem Pose-Problem Solve Purpose: to share challenges and brainstorm solutions together and to reflect on and share practice with coaching partner Think about a challenge you are experiencing with one of your Beginning Teachers. Take a few minutes to write about it. Describe the situation and what you have already tried. o With partner, (10 minutes each), A describes challenge and what has been tried. B listens, then paraphrases and asks clarifying questions. o A and B engage in reflective conversation regarding A s challenge and brainstorm ideas, next steps together. o Next, B describes challenge and what has already been tried. o A asks clarifying questions and paraphrases. o B and A engage in reflective conversation regarding B s challenge and brainstorms ideas, next steps together. o Whole group returns to share out/reflect on practice. 8
Reflect and Share Share out with whole group: In what ways did the Problem Pose-Solve support your problem solving? What are you learning about yourself as a listener/coach? What insights did you gain regarding your own challenge? 9
