CAREER ADVISING TOOLKIT: Notice and Wonder Root Cause Analysis Sample Group Activity Office of Graduate Success - 2022
I NOTICE Some teachers still are lecturing from the front of the classroom, and students taking notes individually and not having discussions/collaborat ions Based on principal observations not all classrooms participate in student centered learning opportunities I notice that we have pockets of teachers who are implementing project-based learning, while other teachers are more of a lecture format. Need to provide more professional development to all teachers on project- based learning I notice that our mission statement aligns to career planning Our school/district implements student- centered instructional programming in all classrooms I notice that some of our classrooms are teacher driven on content vs student driven by process I notice we have AP and CCP courses in every area but Science 3
I WONDER I wonder if we had regular training during our TBT s that we would have additional teachers having problem- based learning I wonder how to help some teachers give more time to student centered learning I wonder how we can provide teachers with more PD on student centered teaching strategies I wonder how we can do additional training for our teachers I wonder how we can more closely involve business partners in our day-to-day curriculum more than just a single project I wonder how we can make 21st century skills more a part of curriculum 4
NOTICE AND WONDER EMERGING TRENDS? Planning on implementing an industry 4.0 program next school year to address student interest and 21st Century Project-based learning --- giving teachers time to plan and support to release some of their control Student-centered learning needs to happen in all classrooms Helping staff have time/training to provide student- centered classrooms Student-driven processes and additional daily integration 5
COMPONENTS OF EDUCATIONAL EQUITY MENTIONED/MISSING MULTIPLE TIMES? We discussed some resistance from teachers looking at the student- centered learning projects being in addition to what they are already doing instead of an integration into their classroom We discussed that schools put more emphasis on college planning than on skills training and the trades Our county data shows how only 15- 20 percent of our students finish college and utilize their degree More involvement of parents in career planning will facilitate student centered learning We also notice that Special Education procedures have a transition planning process, but regular education students don t have formal transition plans. We are becoming more focused on graduation planning embedded into the schedule for each year, having each student revisit their plan ideas each school year prior to scheduling Opportunities for students to apply their academic knowledge to their career interests or to their general interests not available in all classrooms 6
WHICH STATEMENT LEADS TO THE MOST IMPACTFUL CHANGE? Empowering teachers and students in the classroom, identifying needs, to better prepare our students for all options A more formalized career advising process needs to happen for all students from middle school through high school More parents, business and community involvement All stakeholders need to help with this process Teachers will be provided time and support (financial, social emotional and educational) to implement project-based learning Opportunities for students to apply their academic knowledge to their career interests or to their general interests not available in all classrooms Career advising should not fall only on the shoulders of school counselors The district will provide additional planning time and development to have project-based learning occur more daily 7
