Commutative Property What does it mean to commute ? (Hint: You commute to school and home every day; your parents or guardians most likely commute to work and home each day) To travel back and forth
Soit looks like this in math: 4 x 5 = 5 x 4 Can you come up with a catch phrase to remember this property?
Commutative Property of Addition ? + ? = ? + ? Example: ? + ? = ? + ? Does this property work with subtraction? Why or why not?
Commutative Property of Multiplication ? ? ? = ? ? ? Example: ? ? ? = ? ? ? Does this property work with division? Why or why not?
Associative Property What does to associate mean? (Hint: I like to associate with my friends at lunch time. Since he moved, he doesn t really associate with the same people any more. ) To hang out with or be friends with OR the person you hang out with (It can be a verb or a noun)

It looks like this in math: (4 x 5) x 2 = Can you come up with a catch phrase to remember this property? 5 is associating with 4. You can tell by the parentheses, or arms around each other.4 x (5 x 2) Now, 5 is associating with 2. The arms , or parentheses are around 2.
Associative Property of Addition (? + ?) + ? = ? + (? + ?) Example: (?? + ??) + ? = ?? + (?? + ?) When three numbers are added, it makes no difference which are added first. Notice how adding the 13 + 7 first makes completing the problem easier mentally.
Associative Property of Multiplication (a x b) x c = a x (b x c) Example: (? ? ?) ? ? = ? ? (? ? ?) When three real numbers are multiplied, it makes no difference which are multiplied first. Notice how multiplying the 4 and 5 first makes completing the problem easier.
Distributive Property ? ? + ? = ? ? + ? ? ?(? ?) = ? ? ? ? Examples: ?(? + ?) = (? ?) + (? ?) ?(? ?) = (? ?) (? ?) Distributive Property is the sum or difference of two expanded products.
