  1. Proportional vs. Nonproportional Relationships 5-5

  2. Vocabulary Proportional: For a relationship to be constant there has to be a constant ratio. The graph of a proportional relationship will cross through the origin (0,0). Nonproportional: No constant ratio. The graph will not cross the origin.

  3. There are 2 ways to check proportionality 1. Ratio Tables two quantities must have a constant ratio (constant of proportionality) To find this, simply take the y value and place it over the x value (like a ratio) simplify if needed If all of your ratios are the same, the table is proportional if they aren t, the table is nonproportional

  4. Example Determine whether the cost of coffee is proportional to the number of pounds. If the relationship is proportional, identify the constant of proportionality. Coffee (lbs.) 1 Cost ($) 3 2 6 3 9 4 12

  5. 2. Graphing a line on a graph will indicate whether or not something is proportional If a line is straight and it runs through the origin (0,0), then it is proportional if it isn t straight and doesn t run through the origin, then it is nonproportional

  6. Example Identify which graphs are proportional and which are nonproportional Image result for non proportional graph Image result for proportional graph Image result for non proportional graph Image result for proportional graph

  7. Is it Proportional? Uptown Pizzeria sells medium pizzas for $7 each but charges a $3 deliver fee per order. Is the cost of an order proportional to the number of pizzas ordered? Find the cost of 1, 2, 3, and 4 pizzas and make a table to display numbers and cost. Then determine the proportionality.
