Maximo Application Suite Migration to Managed Services Overview Michael Cookson Michael.Cookson@ibm.com April 2021
MAS Migration Migrating from Maximo 7.6.1.x to Maximo Application Suite Managed Services has two major components: 1)Migration from one physical server location to another physical server location 2)Technical changes between the traditional Maximo delivery and the new MAS delivery The following covers the major activities needed and the responsibilities of IBM and the client through this migration. This presentation is focused on migration from Maximo SaaS Flex to MAS MS, but almost all steps would be required for a migration from an onpremise (including 3rd party cloud providers hosting Maximo 7.6.1.x) to Maximo Application Suite Managed Services.
Journey to MAS Managed Service 2021 Complete MAS Managed Service Flex (On-Prem) Live on MAS Test 1 Post Live MAS activities Initial Set Up Test 2 Planning Cutover production weekend Backflow to non-production instances Hypercare for 1 week after cutover Project Planning - Budget - Approvals - Timeframes - requirements definition - Quotes and any additional contracts required Deploy MAS MS and applications Remediate changes as required Setup integrations including any VPN Upgrade to 8.4 Migrate database Finish remediation of changes needed Repeat the process of upgrading and migrating database Test as required Take accurate timings of steps for Production cutover
Planning Pre-conditions Upgrade to 7.6.1.2 - testing Initial Set up Test one Test Two Production cutover Client Project initiation - client process to allocate resources, project - begin VPN config as soon as MAS MS environments known - client network team Itemize all componets that need to be migrated (attachments, customer reports - Configure VPN - Test the MAS MS instance - Test the MAS MS instance - Acceptance test Client (Items that could be delegated to Lab Services, BP or GBS Upgrade to 7.6.1.2 - config changes, remediation required - after MAS MS environment up, remediate any items that be done through the Maxadmin user - make integration changes as needed - upgrade test DB to 8.x (CSA, DB) export DB and ready for transfer along with identified attachments and reports (CC) - remediate any changes needed through Maxadmin user - remediate any changes needed through Maxadmin user Removal of JAVA code CDS SaaS Flex or Perform technical upgrade (CC, DBA, CSA) backflow prod database to test environment to be used for test runs (CC, DBA) - upgrade test DB to 8.x (CC, DBA) ' export DB and ready for transfer along with identified attachments and - receive DB and import to MAS MS testing area (CC, DBA) - start application (CC) -make config changes that only MAS MS can do with regard to the remediation items (CC, CSA, DBA) - upgrade test DB to 8.x (CC, DBA) ' export DB and ready for transfer along with identified attachments, and reports (CC) - receive DB and import to MAS MS testing area (CC, DBA) - start application (CC) -make config changes that only MAS MS can do with regard to the remediation items (CC, CSA, DBA) - support final acceptance testing (teams as needed) Client (Items could be delegated to Expert Services, BP or GBS) MAS MS Team Presales team support client planning and estimating - Provision MAS MS environments (Provisioning) - Provision Optimizer H/W if required (Provisioning) - Install configure optimizer (Provisioning) - Begin configration of VPN if required as soon as MAS MS Environment known (Network) - Configure VPN (Network) - receive DB and import to MAS MS testing area (CC, DBA) - start application (CC) -make config changes that only MAS MS can do with regard to the remediation items (CC, CSA, DBA) - support integration changes as needed (CC, CSA) - Ensure SSO is working if required (CC, CSA) - Support testing of MAS MS instance (CC, other chapters as required) - remediate data issues, web application server issues, readhat issues (As required) - Support testing of MAS MS instance (CC, others as required) - remediate data issues, web application server issues, readhat issues (As rquired)]
Planning Journey to MAS Managed Service MAS Managed Service Flex (On-Prem) Metrics used for sizing Factor Low Medium High Custom Database Size < 100 GB < 500 GB < 1 TB > 1TB *Technical Remediation Items Integrations, VPN No 1-3 4-15 15+ All RMI replaced with REST API s Number of Sites 2 2-3 4+ 10+ All integrations using apikeys Disaster Recovery No Yes Yes Yes 3rd Party Tools No 1 2-4 5+ JMS queues updated and replaced with Kafka. Technical remediation required due to MAS MS* No 1 2-4 5+ SCIM replaces all VMM sync. All SOAP 1.1 replaced The above table is only to provide general guidance. A detailed review of the client needs to be done at time of planning to ensure no factors are being missed.
SaaS Flex to MAS MS Migration Timelines Planning Precondition Initial Set up Test one Test two Production Low: 2-4 months elapsed Client: 3-5 person month effort Planning and precondition are not included in the effort estimates as these are variable and outside of IBM control. Medium: 3-6 months elapsed Client: 4-8 person month effort High: 5-12 months elapsed Client: 10-18 person month effort Custom: high complexity Client: 18+ person month Note the estimates above are general guidelines only. A planning effort is needed to identify the true effort for each client. The calculator will include costs for this migration. These estimates and the overall process would also apply to customers migration from On premise implementations to MAS MS
Next Steps Discuss migration with clients well ahead of their renewal date. Sales / renewal reps / CSM s will lead this discussion. Engage OM and the CDS team for inputs for planning of a specific client to the MAS Managed Service Decks and material available on Seismic
Details for each phase Appendix A
Planning and PreConditions Steps to understand the scope of the migration, whether an upgrade is required, timelines, personnel required, funding and other items that are heavily dependent on internal client processes IBM provides support and input from the Sales Team CSM Team, SaaS Flex Team and the MAS MS Team on tasks, budget items, time lines and other factors required to properly plan this project Client must be on the minimum version (7.6.1.2) and supported database technology. All JAVA code has been removed
Initial Set Up Task IBM Client (or Designate) Deploy MAS in selected data center X Install applications X Perform initial configuration X Identify SaaS Flex site for data to use in initial test X Identify all components that need to be migrated (attachments, custom reports S P Begin VPN Set up X X Remediation of JAVA class files P Configure any integrations in MAS S P This initial set up can take a few days to complete and is relatively quick to do. The completion of the VPN will depend heavily on availability of client network team
Migration Test One Task IBM Client (or Designate) Export data from SaaS Flex and transfer to MAS MS X Remediate technical changes in MASMS through Maxadmin X Remediate technical changes in MASMS at OS Level X Deploy Attachments X Import Database and deploy EAR X Finalize any changes needed X X Ensure any integrations X X Test Changes S P Remediate errors X X
Migration Test Two Task IBM Client (or Designate) Export data from SaaS Flex and transfer to MAS MS X Remediate technical changes in MASMS through Maxadmin X Remediate technical changes in MASMS at OS Level X Import Database X Finalize any changes needed X X Finalize integrations X X Test Changes S P Remediate errors X X Ensure timings for all steps recorded X X
Go Live Task IBM Client (or Designate) Export data from SaaS Flex and transfer to MAS MS X Remediate technical changes in MASMS through Maxadmin X Remediate technical changes in MASMS at OS Level X Deploy Attachments X Import Database and deploy EAR X Finalize any changes needed X X Finalize integrations X X Test Changes S P Go Live X X
Post Go Live After go live, backflows and final configurations of other test systems are completed and turned over to the client Hyper-care for the following week to resolve any found issues Final meeting to review the migration for improvement suggestions
