Posting Online: Think before you post What types of things do you, your parents, your friends, your siblings and other people you know post online? What are the positive and negative results from posting all of the things you listed online?
Posting Photos: things to consider Do you have on appropriate clothing? Are you doing something that you might not want everyone (parents, teachers, friends and family included) to know about? Can you tell too much about your personal life/personal information from the photo (such as your address on a house or your phone number written on something)?
Posting Written Comments: things to consider Is the comment derogatory or demeaning? Is the comment appropriate for everyone (including parents, teachers, friends and family) to see? Is the comment something that you want everyone to know? Does your comment contain personal/private information? Is your comment true and/or accurate?
Protect your Space: Privacy Settings What Private Information on your Profile is Actually Public: Privacy settings for sharing content are different from the settings for connecting with other people. This means that, when people search for you, they can still see information about you: your photo, gender, age, education, hometown etc. These settings also determine how people can find you. Can they do it simply by searching for your name? Can anyone add you as a friend? Send you a message? While you want friends to be able to find you, be sure that your personal information is not visible to strangers by changing these settings.
Protect your Space: Privacy Settings Who can see the information you have on Facebook or other media websites? Websites allow you to change privacy settings so that you can share content with Everyone, Friends of Friends, or Friends only. You should set your profile to Friends only, and become friends with only people you know are friends with in person. Preview my Profile is an option on Facebook which lets you see your profile as someone else would.

Protect your Information Always remember to avoid posting too much information Use privacy settings, obscure usernames/gamer tags and secure passwords to protect your personal information!

CONSEQUENCES OF POSTING INFORMATION When you post something online, where does that information go? It may be owned by the website it s posted on. It is saved in the memory of the computer you are using at the time, even if you delete it. It is saved on servers or computers around the world by the web address owners. Coaches, high schools, colleges, and employers can look at the information you post and decide that you should not be on the team, or that you should not receive a scholarship or job. Can it ever be erased or deleted? Not really. You can erase the post, but it still exists elsewhere and can be found even if you can no longer see it where you originally posted it. Remember- the internet is forever! Who owns/has rights to the information you post online? The website/web address owners. Sometime you have a partial ownership, but not always. This is all dependent on the terms of use for the particular website you are using and they are all different.

CONCLUSION Think before you share information online. Think before you post information online. Think before you talk or share information with anyone online. Things to think about: Is the information appropriate? Is it personal/private information? Do I want everyone to know this information? Is it hurtful, mean, derogatory or untrue?
