Need Of Data Protection Sensitive information like bank details can be leaked which can be misused by hackers or thieves for financial frauds. Personal data such as photos, call recordings , documents ,passwords of social media accounts ,etc. can go in the hands of other people which can be used for blackmailing and creating fake profiles to do cybercrimes.
Preventive Measures Keep track of important data Write down the computer serial number and model number, the support phone number, and any other useful details about the computer and store that information in your files. Keep the receipts of your computer and associated equipment. This information will come in handy when you need to report the laptop as stolen.
Lock Your Computer or Laptop With Strong And Unique Password. Safeguard All Passwords So That They Should not Be Easily And Readily Available To Others In Case Of Theft. Lock Your Screen Frequently. Change Your Passwords Often And Keep Record of Them.
Engrave, or put a sticker on the laptop with a phone number with a reward for laptop return if lost. Often many thieves can't get more than this on the black market and may call you to sell it back to you. Backup your important data -Keep an external backup of all your important data. Having your important data on a CD or other drive or cloud that's not part of your computer can save you lots of time and pain if your computer goes missing.
Encrypt sensitive data -If you have important or information that you would like to keep confidential, make sure to encrypt or password protect that data so that it will not be easily readable to other people in case of theft or loss.
Use Laptop Protection Services: Check to see if your laptop has TheftGuard or any other security system that can be enabled. If not, consider an alternative program.
Curative measures Report to cyber cell about lost or theft. Change your online and email passwords immedieatly so that risk of misuse of sensitive data is reduced. According to some reports, only 3% of computers or laptops which are stolen or lost are recovered. Hence prevention is better than cure.
