Psalm 71 Two Themes: Save me & the next generation Psalm 71:2b Psalm 69:1 Save me, O God! For the waters have. Come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me, I am weary with crying; My throat is dry; My eyes fail while I wait for my God. V. 14 deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink; Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. Let not the floodwater overflow me, nor let the deep swallow me up; and let not the pit shut its mouth on me.
This Psalm 69 along with Psalm 22, is the most frequently quoted Psalm in the New Testament: Psalm 69:4 John 15:25 Psalm 69:9 John 2:17; Romans 15:3 Psalm 69:22-23 Romans 11:9-10 Psalm 69:25 Acts 1:20
The author describes a person in the depths of despair, suffering in every possible way because of his devotion to God. Psalm 69:7-12 - He wants to worship God in the way he was instructed. This describes Jesus feelings as he endured persecution and the agony of the cross. Psalm 109:26 (ESV) - Help me, O LORD my God! One translation says Because of your constant love, save me! Older now and the Next Generation Psalm 71:9 - Do not cast me off in the time of old age, do not forsake me when my strength fails. Psalm 71:17-18 - O God, You have taught me from my youth; and to this day I declare Your wondrous works. Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone to come. V. 19 Your righteousness, O God, is very high, You who have done great things. I Timothy 4:16-17
Salvation starts with an event; but it is a process: Psalm 71:9 Psalm 71:12 I am to be a carrier of the manifest presence of God.
At the end of my life may I be found praising God (Psalm 71:19-24). Psalm 71:20-21 Listen to Dr. Woods prayer, Lord Jesus, as I grow older, I have a choice between counting my bruises or counting my blessings, trusting You or testing You, grouching or giving thanks, regretting my if onlys or rejoicing in how You provided. Keep my mind and heart clear of clutter and confusion so I never forget who You are, what You have done for me, and the bright promise of all that yet lies ahead.
Observation from Psalm 74: Psalm 74:13-17 You divide the sea by Your strength. You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters. You broke the heads of the Leviathan in pieces (large sea creatures) this represents the oppressive rulers of Egypt. You broke open the fountain; and the flood. You dried up mighty rivers. You have prepared the light and the sun. You have set all the borders of the earth.
