AC Background 2004: Track founded with criteria for promotion based on time and teaching 2012: Promotion criteria revised in 2012 to include teaching excellence, clinical expertise as assessed by Clinical Performance Evaluations and distinguishing contributions AC Advisory Committee implemented to advise PSOM COAP on AC faculty actions 2019: Promotion criteria revised to reflect Areas of Concentration 3
Rationale for Revisions Last revision in 2019 Now largest faculty tack New criteria reflect the cases PSOM ACC is already seeing so this is acknowledging that excellence Promotion now reflects impact and trajectory like other tracks AOC s distinguish AC track from PMC s 4
Summary of Major Changes For AC Promotion flexibility Credit for time served in prior faculty appointment Foundational requirements Elevation of importance of impact/reputation in AoC for promotion 5
Promotion Flexibility Promotion is based on the peer review of one s impact in an AoC. Generally, promotion to associate does not occur before second reappt. Faculty on steep trajectory may be ready sooner, but rarely will be eligible until after successful completion of the first reappointment. Unless time served elsewhere, the earliest promotion to associate professor is in year 4. If declined, candidate may be brought back after 3 years. Promotion to Professor may be considered after 3 years. If declined, candidate may be brought back after 3 years. 6
Credit for Time Served Time in rank at peer institution may be considered when assessing a candidate's trajectory and engagement. Candidates with at least two years in a faculty appointment prior to PSOM, could be considered concomitantly with the first reappointment. Such proposals will be rare and should be pre-reviewed by the PSOM COAP ACC chair prior to initiating a request for promotion in the department. 7
Foundational Requirements Demonstrated excellence in education Demonstrated excellence as a clinician (or providing contributions to the clinical mission) Sustained professionalism 8
Change in Evaluation Process Peer evaluations will focus on impact in AoC External peers necessary for professor Elimination of clinical performance evaluations Inclusion of non faculty referees 9
Assistant Professor Candidates are evaluated for their potential to contribute to the educational and clinical missions and of their likelihood of developing an AoC. 10
Associate Professor Meet the foundational expectations Sustained high-quality engagement in at least one domain of education High quality engagement in clinical care. Sustained professionalism Evidence that the candidate has attained recognition outside of their division for engagement in their AoC Assessed by peer references from outside one s division for evidence of high-quality engagement 11
Professor Meet the foundational expectations Evidence that the candidate is a leader in their AoC as assessed by peer references external to and across the Penn Medicine/CHOP. In most AoC domains, it is possible to achieve a regional/national reputation, but in smaller/niche fields, and depending on candidate s role, it may be more limited. A holistic review of each candidate will be performed by the COAP- ACC to assess reputation in the context of the AoC. 12
